I've purchased two Wellington's from the same UK vendor over the last few weeks and it would appear that not all Wellingtons are the same.

The first (in Faux Horn) would appear to be Rooney made (based upon the knot and lettering on the handle) whilst the second (in Ebony) appears to be a Vulfix made brush.

The knot is different (it has a 5mm higher loft, a noticeable glue bump and feels like Simpsons Best hair) and the lettering is the same as Vulfix have used in other brushes such as the Grosvenor LE 2-band brush.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, though.

My Ebony Wellington feels almost identical in use to my Simpsons 57 and that, for me, is a very good thing indeed. Smile

Here's some pictures of the Faux Horn brush next to a M&F 1/2 and a Rooney 1/3 as well as the Ebony brush next to a Berkley and 57 for comparison:

Thanks for posting! I have a T&H/Rooney 3/1 that I picked up last year, and I was looking at the new Wellingtons on the US website and was wondering if they were still made by Rooney. Curious if the case is the same in the US as the UK.

The Rooney made brush looks like it is more compact, probably due to the lower loft, and therefore more dense. If I had to choose between the two just looking at the hair, the Rooney wins. Add the handle into the equation and the Rooney wins by a mile, that faux horn on recent Rooney and M&F brushes is stellar.

+1. I'll take the faux horn. What is the density like?

They're both really nice brushes in their own right.

The density of the Faux Horn brush feels similar to other Rooney Silvertip knots I've owned / used.

The Ebony brush has a similar density to an EJ Silvertip.

I'm not sure that I can say that I prefer one over the other as they both bring different qualities to the table.

They both perform excellently in a bowl (which for me is the true measure of a brush given that I only ever bowl lather), and I'm well happy with both of them. Smile
