So, never having tried a shampoo bar in my life but hearing a lot of good things about them I decided to try one out.

I settled on Mike's Soaps as I've never used any of his products and thought this would be a great way to see what he creates.

Ordered it online and received the soap about 10 days later.

Neatly packaged in cardboard and wax paper wrapping that would make any wannabe hipster proud. Smile

The list of ingredient on the back of the package:

Mike was also kind to include a sample of a bath soap;

Unwrapping the soap it does look very 'home made' but in a rather nice, wholesome sort of way:

It's relatively hard - feels like most other soaps. Not 'brittle' in any way and no chunks of soap will be falling off it Smile

This morning I gave it a try for the first time during a shower.

Scent: I am not a big fan of peppermint. I believe this is the only scent-combo Mike has currently so I ordered it knowing that but was secretly hoping it would be stronger on the Lavender side of things.
Unfortunately it's not. It's pretty pepperminty.
I didn't find the scent overly pleasant. It even came across as a bit 'artificial'. Maybe I'll get used to it. If I could have this soap in a Stirling "Sharp Dressed Man" scent..I'd be in heaven.

Performance: Wow. Wow.... Absolutely exploded with nice lather in my hair. All I did was rub the bar gently against my wet hair and within seconds I had better lather than I ever get from liquid shampoos. It felt amazing.
What also felt very different was how the hair felt after I rinsed out the shampoo - it felt, really, genuinely clean.

After the shower I applied some Old Spicy 'Spiffy' pomade to my hair and I swear my hair took to the pomade better than before.

I am extremely pleased with the product. If there was another scent I'd be all over that but just based on performance alone this is one amazing shampoo bar. I love the natural ingredients.

Now I see what you shampoo bar users meant Smile

I've been using it every day since I got it and it is...AMAZING.
My hair feels great and super clean. No itchy scalp any more and the lather..oh wow...I rub it against my hair for 5 seconds and it lathers up like a storm.

I will buy more!

Seems like photobucket stops showing your images when you reach their free 10GB bandwidth cap.

If anyone knows of a good, free photo hosting site where there is no bandwidth cap - just storage cap - let me know Smile

In my experience, the scent mellows out a fair bit as the bar ages... but the cleaning power does not Smile

I've been thinking about branching out into some of the aritsan shave soaps and it sounds like Mikes is one of the better ones based on reviews; at the same time I've also wanted to get a shampoo bar as well, so I think I'll kill two birds with one stone.

I've never tried Mike's shaving soaps, but his shampoo bar has made me a 100% convert - this thing is amazing. Best shampoo lather ever and my hair has never felt as clean as it does now.

I shave my head with a trimmer, do you think the little bit of stubble is enough to get lather created from a bar?

I can on of course only guess but I would think so..I rub the bar against my hair for about 8-10 seconds and the lather is almost instant.

I have tried 4 different artisan shampoo bars in the last year and Mike's is the best so far. Current bar going on 3 months of daily use as 3-4 twirls on the head more than enough. Scent is ok but I wish it had a little bit more of Hungarian Lavender in it. SDM is an FO and all the artisan that I looked at for shampoo bars do not use FO in their shampoo bars only EO's and most bars have peppermint, tee tree or rosemary oil in them as they promote hair growth, helps regulate scalp oil production, thickens your hair, slows graying just to name a few.

Wow, mine will barely made it a month. I use it for my whole body though. I'm wondering if since I use clippers on my head if that short prickly hair destroys the soap quicker. Maybe I'll order another one and see if I can use it more sparingly.

I have thin follicles and I keep my hair short which helps but when I first started using a shampoo bar I started out with 10 swirls on the head and produced way too much lather and found that 3-4 was the perfect for me.

Another bar that I like is J.R. Liggett. Last a long time and has couple of different formulations.
