I recently received a tub of unscented MdC as a gift from a good friend and fellow forum member and thought that I'd test it out against a new English soap I recently acquired - Wickham Super Smooth (apologies if my photos are not up to my normal standard - my DSLR was not available today so I had to use my phone instead).

[Image: 21F47A83-6587-437D-9195-F5D7A186E706_zps4e304225.jpg]

I chose the unscented version of the Super Smooth soap for the comparison test as I hadn't used it prior to today and thought that it would be good to try it out against another unscented soap.

Super Smooth comes in a number of different scents - I've only tried the Club Cola version before and was very impressed with it so I had high hopes for the unscented version and, as you will see below, I wasn't disappointed.

As can be seen from the photo below, Super Smooth comes in a very wide plastic container. The manufacturer designed it this way specifically in order to enable it to be used with large brushes and I found this feature to be very useful when I tried the Club Cola version previously.

[Image: 0070E5A6-D010-4F6F-9F96-72D4989B94F3_zps95e995b0.jpg]

Super Smooth is a soft soap with a consistency similar to Italian soaps such as Cella and Valobra.

The unscented version has hardly any scent at all unlike the MdC which has a faint and pleasing Rosemary and Lavender scent.

I can best describe the unscented Super Smooth as having a very faint moisturising cream smell to it which very quickly dissipates when lathered.

Like the MdC it has very few ingredients listed on the label:

For the test I used my Simpsons PJ2 Super Badger brush and bowl lathered using a Steve Woodhead Pedestal Bowl.

Here's some pictures of the MdC and Super Smooth after a few brush loading swirls:

[Image: 73565C5D-EE0D-4B81-B66F-12F583337226_zpsb073bd96.jpg]

[Image: 6AAC8429-355D-403C-AE04-61503CE16D8D_zpsc2af65e7.jpg]

And some pictures of the two fully lathered:

[Image: 089A8E6A-B797-4D02-BD60-C77422FDE712_zps64c33f4f.jpg]

The MdC created a very nice thick and dense lather whilst the Super Smooth produced almost twice as much lather as the MdC - this was as much of the Super Smooth lather as I could load onto the PJ2 and a fair bit of lather was left in the bowl.

I found the MdC to give greater cushioning during the shave and it left my skin feeling very moisturised post-shave.

This is not to say that the Super Smooth is any slouch in this area though. It gives excellent cushioning and slickness and does provide a good level of post-shave moisturising.

Overall, the MdC felt the nicer soap of the two but only by the narrowest of margins. There is a very big price difference between the two soaps though and on a value-for-money basis the Super Smooth is the clear winner.

Would I buy the Super Smooth again when this tub runs out (which I suspect will be a very long time into the future as so little product is used per shave)?

The answer is a resounding yes - Super Smooth is a great product which, in my view, deserves a place in my soap collection and is up there with the best English, French, German and Italian soaps on the market.

Fantastic! It's great to see some new artisan products coming from the wet shaving motherland.

Great review! Thanks for posting it.

The Super Smooth has an especially interesting ingredients list.

Where can you buy Super Smooth soap?

This is the only place I know where you can currently buy it Murray.

http://w-soap.co.uk

I understand that there may well be a US distributor on the way though.

It might be worth contacting the owner, Darron, and confirming with him where else the soap can be purchased from. Smile

Thanks for the link!

I'm not trying many new products at this point, but the ingredients list of this soap intrigues me. I'll probably test some of it for myself one of these days. I appreciate you introducing it to us.

I'll be testing this for tomorrow's shave. The owner Darron is a great guy and sent me a sample to play with.

Great to hear. A lot of people really like this soap in the Club Cola scent.

First shave with Wickham complete.

Very nice product. For me it beats MdC because the post shave feel was way better. Also, this was the Bay Rum sample which I enjoyed. I'm not a fan MdCs signature scent and I haven't tried the fougere.

This is a soap I could definitely see as being part of my rotation. Well done.

Thanks for the feedback, Joseph. Now, if only I could find it in North America...Winky

I agree 100% with you, Joe.

First shave with the Club Cola for me this morning. I bought and sold MdC twice because of my discontent with post shave feel. The Wickham soap is in a different league here.

If I have to criticise, it's with the scent. Very mild in the unused state, reducing to barely noticeable when lathered.

I'm quite curious about this one... Shame about the mild scent, though. Does anyone know if all of them have a weak scent?

David, I also purchased the Southend Beach scent, which again is very mild. The scent of this is very similar to the De Vergulde Hand stick, IMO. I will use it tomorrow to see if that fades to virtual scentlessness as well.

I don't even see that scent on their website. Looking forward to your impressions, David.

Sorry, David, I put the wrong town. I meant Southsea Beach.

David (TheMonk) : I think David is referring to Southsea Spray.

David (Optometrist) : Darron (the man behind the Wickham soaps), is a nice fellow, and I'm sure would be welcome to hearing constructive commentary on his products, as they are relatively new to market. Maybe the soaps need a 'scent boost' ... Smile
