On this date in 1961, ABC's TV program Wide World of Sports premiered. I probably watched it more than any other program through the mid-60s, and it helped to nourish my lifelong interest in sports. The "agony of defeat" ski jump crash of Vinko Bogataj featured at the beginning of each show from the early 1970s inspired a syndrome called "agonosis", which is defined in the book Sniglets as "The syndrome of tuning in on Wide World of Sports every weekend just to watch the skier rack himself."

Thanks for the memory, John! I used to watch this program quite often also as a young immigrant kid! It was fascinating! Biggrin
