The Joy of Joris

[attachment=1821]

This March, as a birthday gift I was presented with an incredibly beautiful Joris razor. This is my first Joris razor and I wish to share my jubilation over such a fine, excellently hand crafted tool.

[attachment=1822]

The razor features a delightful black barrel style handle made of lacquer and finished with a retro white pinstripe. The open comb head is palladium. The razor came exquisitely packaged in gorgeous wooden presentation box.

[attachment=1823]

The handle is extremely comfortable. The razor feels substantial, but not overweight. While it boasts some substantial blade exposure making it aggressive, it's still tame compared to the R41 (2011).

[attachment=1824]

The razor is 4.5 inches long and weighs55 grams. I know Joris command more than a modest investment, but from an aesthetic point of view alone this razor is worth it!

My first shave with Joris...

[attachment=1829]

I had two days growth. After a shower, I grabbed a Carter Era Simpson Polo 12 (Super), my G5 scuttle, a tube of Proraso, a Rapira blade, the Joris and set to work. I had an absolutely fantastic shave! It shaved as close as my R41, but absolutely no irritation. Finding the correct angle was a breeze and it didn't punish me when I experimented with it. Great audible feedback and super comfortable. After my first pass with the grain I could tell it had done a better job than my standard 3 passes (WTG, XTG & ATG) with a Merkur 11C. So I decided to skip my usual across the grain and go straight to against the grain. The result was my best shave ever! (And in only 2 passes and no touch ups!) I finished up by spraying on some Proraso after shave expecting a bit of a sting (with such a close shave), but all I got was a subtle, even pleasant reminder that I had just shaved. Even SWMBO (who really doesn't understand this obsession) remarked positively on the shave.

Ben, congrats! I have two Joris DEs and have coveted that pinstripe model for some time. But I've never seen the wood presentation box. Is that the way it's always been sold and I've been asleep at the wheel? Oh no, I'm in trouble. Again.

It came packaged like so direct from Joris Viart at Rassage Plisson. I've dealt with him personally in regards to some special Plisson brushes and he helped me acquire this razor too. Most of the razors are now pictured with this style of packaging on the website (the older presentation box was a nice addition, but not as classy as this one).

I'm keen to acquire a second Joris too.

I have my eye on this one:

Phil stocks this one and I've been tempted many times...

The Joris is simply stunning Ben. And a beautiful presentation box to go with it. Use it well.

That is a really nice presentation box. The Joris boxes that I have are made of wood but do not look as finished. Hopefully I will get these boxes with my next shipment.

I think I might have to embrace the stripe theme and partner it with this from my M&F collection:

Like i said, your stuff just keeps multiplying! Haha.
Beautiful razor. Alas, i was not able to tame mine and had to let it go on its way to a new home.
Enjoy the razor, Ben. Great striped combo! You know, you are going to have to find a striped duck to go along with the pair! Hehe.

Gorgeous stuff Ben & great pictures that really catch the beauty of your collection. How long do you spend contemplating you setup for the next shave each day?
