For the record, this is my latest acquisition: a Benwell 76 boar bristle brush, Made in England.

I am uncertain of the date, but judging by the style/lathing, I would say early 1940s, but I'd be most interested to know a more accurate date if anyone has a clue.

There is very little information available on Benwell brushes as far as my researches reveal. It is catalin for sure; just under the very surface butterscotch, the handle is white.

This brush is NOS; mint condition and came with a terribly nondescript brown box with (I think) 7/6 on the side (seven shillings and sixpence?)

As you can see, it's not a thick knot, but I soaked it in borax,/white vinegar (the usual clean up) and the bristles are very soft with lots of backbone. I can tell it is a hand-made brush because of the lathing marks under close examination. It weighs in at 48g, hefty for its size. My Simpson Case weighs in at 41, to give some comparison.

Anyway, it's certainly a very beautiful, fluted and very stylish brush, I am sure you'll agree.

I even looked up the building it was manufactured or where Benwell HQ was, at least: 4 Station Parade, Chipstead, Surrey.

H.G. Benwell & Co. Ltd. started business in 1937, so the brush has to date after that.

Yes, it's certainly a stylish brush, that's for sure; every bit as good as a hand-turned Simpson; very fine lathing marks.
