I got a Progress a few days back and later today I'm going to use it. Just to get an idea of how the numbers work, what number on the progress do you tend to use and what would you compare that to?
Right now my favorite to shave with are my 37c, my slim at 8-9 and my weber PH with a sharp blade. I did some searching for a thread comparing what number on a slim would be the equivalent on the Progress and was surprised to not find such a thread. Of course I'll end up experimenting and finding out what I like, but I'm just kind of curious to what you'd compare to it at certain settings.

I'm excited to use this, lots of people seem to like them. After a couple shaves if it gets the thumbs up it's going straight out to be turned into a Mergress!

I would avise to start at number 1 to get used to the ideal cutting angle and then go up in agressiveness.

3 is mild. 4 is where I stay. Start at 1 and work your way up. If your at 8-9 on a slim, 5 will be nothing

I don't feel like 8-9 on a slim would be more than a 5 on the progress but I guess I'll get a better idea after more use. What I can say is that was one of the best shaves I've ever had, I now understand why a lot of people love this razor. I did most of my shave set at 3 but I did a couple swipes at 1 and then at 5 just to get an idea of the spectrum. I have a hard time getting BBS under my chin and this might have been the easier razor to get almost perfect BBS in that area. Great razor. The GSB, MW jeff's lavender and Progress seemed like a winning combo. Definitely a keeper.

When I use the Progress every day, I keep it on 1.5. If I don't shave for two or three days, I set the razor at 3 or 4.

I'm with you! There isn't a setting on any Gillette adjustable that I have used that will compare to 5 on my Progress.

I dial mine to 5 and go only dialing it down to 2 on the against the grain pass.

For daily shaves I go with 3 on my Progress Long handle. If I have a few days growth, I'll go 4-5+, and usually dial down...Also I feel like the progress on 4+ is most similar to aggressiveness on a Slim set at 8 or 9. Since these two razors shave differently I don't think they really feel the same at these settings, but these settings I'd use for three or more days of growth just the same. I feel like the progress has more blade exposure...I should go look, but I feel like that effects the shave, along with weight, and the weight's distribution differences between the two razors. Both great razors i their own right, that I thoroughly enjoy using! There's something about adjustability Lightbulb

I use the Progress (Mergress in my case) at the minimum setting.

2-3 for me!

I haven't used a vintage Gillette set to 9 that compares to the Progress at 5, either.

Determining the blade exposure on the Merkur Progress is a trial and error process. I personally use the following settings for a BBS shave: WTG 4 XTG 3 ATG 2.

WTG--5
XTG--3
ATG--2

That is what works for me and I get a great irritation free shave. You can simply start low and feel for the correct angle that works for you.

I like it at #4 with a pretty decent blade exposure. I set it and forget it. When the razor is loaded but not in use I dial it down to the lowest setting to keep the tension off the spring.

The progress is "currently" my favorite razor. The angle is very easy to find and it is as smooth as it gets. For me the setup that works is :

4 WTG
3 XTG
2 ATG

My Mergress give the best shave (for me...) at the #3 setting for morning shaves. Evening touchups are set to #1. Works every time!

I normally shave every other day. When that is the case, I use 3 for the WTG and XTG passes, then set it to 2 for the ATG pass. If I haven't shaved for more than 2 days then I move the above settings up by 1. If I shave on consecutive days, I move the above settings down by 1 to minimize irritation.

The beauty of an adjustable razor.
