Hi, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on one of the last Simpson Chubby 3's in Manchurian (Briar or Cobalt) that are available on the LE page of the manufacturer. My question is this, is the Chubby 3 way too large?
I have 3 Chubby 2's and like them pretty much, so I was wondering if I can do a little big bigger with the CH3 in Manchurian.

I recently bought one of those Chubby 3's and have just sold it.
I love my Chubby 2 Manchurian but the size differential is enormous, both in handle and knot. Obviously I can't speak for yourself, but be aware that the Chubby 3 is a monster.

My Chubbies, 1,2 and 3 before selling the 3

Chubby 2s are over the top if you ask me. I like a little more control, more like I'm painting a picture than the side of a barn. A 3 would be used by like a silverback. Someone of that size.

It's a big brush - and for 85% a Chubby 2 would be more than enough, but if you have large hands, a large face and lots of stubble - why not get a Chubby 3 Wink

I own 2 Chubby 3's, one in Manchurian and one in 2-Band, and own 4 Chubby 2's.

I like variety, but Chubby 3 is a huge brush for most guys.

The Chubby 3 is indeed a large brush. Mine is in 2-band so it has an even smaller face feel than the Manchurian, Super and Best, mainly due to the bulb shaped knot. The knot I have is 28.5mm x 51mm, and for me that crosses into the large knot field, where the Chubby 2 that the OP mentions owning, is the top end of medium sized brush spectrum in my book. I have nothing bigger than the Chubby 3 and although this brush is fun to use, longer cleanup and need for much more product makes this brush simply chosen less often than many others. I can imagine if you are a head shaver that this brush would be great to use much more often...

It's not only the larger knot, the handle on the Chubby 3 is quite a bit larger. I have large hands but came to prefer the overall size of the Chubby 2.

Yeah, it's a bit too big for me. Getting a CH2 was a big step.

I have 2 chubby 2's and 2 chubby 3's and like them equally, the the chubby 2 is easier maneuver. Both are excellent and the chubby 3 is definitely not too large for me and I am not really a big guy. YMMV.

It's a lot of money to spend on a brush you are unsure about.

Maybe you could pick it up in Best first, or ask to try someone else's.

My feelings on the CH3 is that the knot would be too big for me, but the handle would be just about right, if anything a bit short.

I would think a Duke 3 would be a little more versatile, although less over the top.

And chances are if you are asking us this question, you may already know that it is too big for you.

Good luck on the purchase!

My Chubby 2 Super 3-band, not totally comparable, feels very close in size to my 3XL. If you have tried a 3XL before then you'll be able to rest assured that the Chubby 3 will be MUCH bigger. IMO, even though I haven't tried a Chubby 3 yet, I wouldn't like it swallowing up half of my face at once.

The 3XL looks bigger, but once you take the 3-band splay into account they feel the same. I threw in a Stubby 3 for size comparison help. Couldn't tell you the 3XL's dimensions as I don't have a caliper and Lee never told me the specs.

Grant, most 3XLs are 30 X 52-53mm from my understanding. Smile

Wow. That's bigger than I though. I thought it was around 28mm. What is the Chubby 3 then? I see pictures of it next to the Chubby 2 and it looks massive. Next to my 3XL, the brush doesn't get towered over like other pictures.

Edit:

I just found this picture online comparing the two:

This is a 3-band Super CH3, the CH3 Manchurian will be much closer to the 3XL bloom wise, maybe even smaller.
