D.R. Harris is one of the most famous British male grooming traditional brands and its still offering a shaving soap with tallow on it,unlike most of the other UK traditional brands.

I have the chance to try out the D.R. Harris shaving soap range (but the Natural one) in the past, and I really like the Almond scent one, since its fragrance its pretty far from those bitter/sweet Italian almond scents, and more like wet soil after a storm. The Arlington came in a second place (who doesnt like the Arlington scent,I wonder),with the lavender on the third place and Marlborough in last place, even when is another nice manly/woody scent, but not for me.

The thing is that the previous puck of lavender soap that I owned didnt almost have a noticeable scent, since it was basically gone, and talking to one of my friends, who is a lover of lavender scents as I am,he told me that his D.R. Harris lavender shaving soaps have a nice fragrance, pretty perceptible and different than other UK lavender soaps like Truefitt and Hill or Cyril R. Salter (maybe my fav. with lavender scent if you ask me today).

So I was able to score this shaving soap with its wooden bowl for a good price, and my friend was right, this soap contains a lavender scent that I couldn't enjoy in the past, since it was too faint to really distinguish it.

The soap smells like fresh lavender, more of the herbal side of the lavender, than the spicy or sweet side. Its different than other lavender shaving soaps that I have tried (yes, different than the T&H,Cyril R. Salter,Vulfix,Culmak that seems to have the same lavender scent) and with some herbal notes that enhances the scent.

Making lather with this soap is very easy. This soap contains Palm Oil as well as Tallow and its easy to load the brush quickly and make tons of thick lather with no effort at all. Here is a pic with a Vulfix Grosvenor and TGN finest badger knot :

The shave with this soap was really good. For me Tallow is not a magical ingredient, and I do believe more in good formulations than magical ingredients,as I said, but this soap is well formulated. Is is better than my Cyril R. Salter veggie based soap or other veggie based soaps offered by the UK brands? No,not really (at least for me) but is a good soap with a nice scent (good that I can smell it now!!!).

Wonderful, Teiste! I only recently "discovered" Harris soaps (I know - gasp!!) but have quickly become a big fan. Along with AOS/Valobra, I think Harris produces one of the best overall lathers out there. Incredibly high quality stuff.

P.S. In case you didn't know, the Almond's scent is extremely light/faint but of course lathers like the rest.

Would the Harris lavender shaving cream be equally as good as the soap?

Skin care wise,no (IMHO).The cream scent is stonger but skin care wise the soap is much better.

Nice review, Teiste. If the soap is as good as the Arlington and Marlborough soaps, then it's got to be good stuff! Thumbsup

DRH Lavender is also one of my favorites despite some redness and irritation that lasts for an hour or so after using it. I guess it’s whatever they use for the lavender scent as I don’t get the same reaction from Arlington. Any other soap or cream that caused this reaction would be sold, but the lather and shaves are just too good. If it wasn't for the irritation, it would be my #1 instead of the Arlington. The scent reminds me of Castle Forbes Lavender, just not as strong. The scent of my DRH puck of Lavender is stronger than my Arlington puck (I wish it were the reverse). My DRH Almond stick has no scent at all.

This is next on my to-buy list. I love Arlington and have been looking for a Lavender I actually enjoy.
