Well, that's disappointing, but great news that the company is doing so well that they're overwhelmed! I wonder if that extends to re-knots as well. I still have an old 57 that needs a new (Simpson) knot.

That is a really good problem to have!

There was an article posted on here a few weeks ago from an Isle of Man paper. It said that they were planning on moving to a bigger building, probably for this very reason.

What's not clear to me is whether they are also temporarily suspending the Limited Editions they periodically issue.

It seems business is really booming for Simpson, that is awesome!

Concerning the new factory, they just moved to a brand new location. Have they already outgrown that I wonder?

This is rough news, and certainly increases demand for older models since supply is on hold...Company's are so different, take Simpson Vs. Shavemac ...Now many can argue which they like better and/or feel is more prestigious, or a better value ect. but I assume they are relatively close in size/sales( I could be wrongHuh, again, assume). Now my point is Simpson rarely offers Special Editions w/Manchurian//2-Band//custom handles//ect. and I've always thought it even tougher to have a bespoke brush made. Now take Shavemac and their offerings...You can make a bespoke brush 24/7 and customize basically anything...handle shape & material//4 or 5 types of hair//knot width & loft height//even custom engraving. I know Simpson has customized to this extreme in the past, but examples are rare. I'm NOT saying Simpson wants to be shavemac or vice versa, and I understand that differences between how companies are run like this has many effects. It can maintain and earn a brand's prestige, changes demand, changes values of previously made items during resale and finally changes a brand's customer's perception. In the end I liked how things were with Simpson, they are my favorite brush company, I can't wait for the TSN-L/E Brush, and hope they keep up some limited editions, eventually gong back to doing custom ordersHeart I hope this news is just due to the company moving again and having less manufacturing space at the moment.

Thought I should chime in here guys on the reasons for this decision.

Effectively all custom brushes - requests, payments, production, QC, etc etc go through my desk. It's been a pleasure dealing with so many charming and wonderful individuals over the course of the last four years. It's a part of my job that leaves me with an enormous sense of satisfaction.

That said, 'we' at Vulfix / Simpson are not specialist bespoke or custom brushmakers in the true sense of the word. We have manufactured variants of production models when & where time has permitted but sadly that time is now at a premium as the business grows.

True artisans such as Rudy Vey and Lee Sabini make their living from creating truly spectacular brushes as they are managers of their own time and destiny. At Simpson we employ over 18 persons and that in itself takes a 'wee' bit of managing, nevermind the day to day production issues.

I've found myself sometimes having to bat around 50 emails a day of 'would be' custom brush purchasers which is a very humbling thing to say - it tells me we are doing something right here.

So to those people I say THANK YOU, you have been incredible.

We have the new M6 2014 TSNLE to be getting on with and a variety of exciting projects in development and further expansion plans at the ready (Hopefully this will eventually free up more time for custom brush production moving forward).

If we do find the time to make something a little different or manage to run some Two Bands or Manchurians, we'll list them on the website and I thank you in advance for your interest in them.

There you go - all on hold, but hopefully not forever!

Cheers fellas!
Smile

Thanks for the additional perspective, Mark.
Personally, I hope, customs will eventually be back on deck as I still strive to add further handle/knot variants to my stable of Simpson 2 Bands - you are aware of some of them... Wink

Great communication from Mark indeed. Sort of a Golden Age of wet shaving once again and the company is handling it very well. Superb that 18 individuals and families are earning a living from producing such wonderful products.

I always wondered how Mark had time for these custom orders. I think it was a great service to provide, but I have some nostalgia for the days when he worked with vendors on limited runs, like the Douglas and Ehsan brushes he made for Bullgoose. Along the same lines, I'm thrilled with the notion of the upcoming M6 LE.

Thank you Mark for responding to the question of future custom brushes and Simpson/Vulfix's current position and future outlook. Your explanation is helpful and for someone like myself whom loves your brushes, and is just plain interesting/exciting news for the future. I'm extremely excited for the M6 and love the opportunity you have given us to own these special brushes, especially given the current standings at your business. I will always be looking forward to any and all Simpson products in the future! I am brand loyal!

Andrew, I mirror your feelings and admit I was late to the game not realizing how special these past opportunities truly were at the time...

This is another scenario in my life where I didn't know just how good I, and we all once had it, until now...with that said Mark W. does mention great artisans in the brush industry and many more are coming out with stand out products like Barrister and Mann, RazoRock ect...So I guess history repeats itself and there will always be companies of differing sizes to meet all kinds/sizes of demand.

I appreciate Mark's explanation, as well as Simpson's involvement in the traditional shaving community. Hopefully, as the company grows and diversifies, it won't forget us loyal brush enthusiasts and will continue to periodically issue LE's in Manchurian and 2-Band.
