In general what is your preferred size of razor an why?
It is dictated by whats available or more of?
Is it what your use to?

Something that I find interesting is this.
I'll bet the most common answer is 6/8.
That being said I make razors and I would say 90% are for razors atleast 8/8 if not bigger...lol.

5/8 is what I'm used to but, I do intend to get a 6/8 down the road at some point to give it a try.

I started off liking large blades 7/8+ all the way up a 19/16" behemoth I once had.

Now I like 5/8" blades.

Strange how that goes. Biggrin

Gentlemen,
Make mine 13/16. Why do I prefer this size? Therein lies one of the mysteries of personal taste.

Very true it does come down to personal taste. The funny thing is tastes change...lol
Before I started making them. I preferred 6/8-13/16.
After I started making them I was forced to shave with 8/8-9/8 because that is what's requested..
It's to the point that now I prefer 7/8-8/8.
Could I go back to preferring 6/8, sure but it would take a bit of time.
(just me thinking out loud) I think the main thing that dictates the "preference" is availability. It's not hard to find plenty of different brand in the 5/8-6/8 size. Once you go to the 7/8 and up, availability goes down and price goes up..lol

I can live with 5/8 but I prefer 6/8 to 7/8 max. I really do not know why but I would guess they are easier to maneuver.

That's not strange. Large blades are fun to use and to look at.

I don't have a preferred size. Sometimes I like using the small 5/8, other times I like using a meat chopper sized razor.

People buy choppers for the simple reason of, 'because they look cool'. I love my 8/8 Butcher, but very rarely use it. Anyway...

My favorite size is 6/8 because it's easy fot me to maneuver. I also prefer a near wedge to quarter hollow because I can't stant noise a full hollow makes.
My perfect razor would be a:
6/8
Swayback with fat monkey tail
1/4 hollow to near wedge
Shoulderless
Spainish point
Traditional shaped pressed horn scales, dyed a deep blue
Bone wedge
Silver steel pins & washers

My preferred size would be 7/8. I like some of the slightly larger ones, and a 13/16 doesn't trouble me at all. I use some 5/8 from time to time as well though, as they are more maneuverable and easier to whip around the face

The reason for that size preference is I like the extra heft and oomph a larger blade gives. I have a very tough beard and the smaller, lighter blades really struggle on my chin. I find them easier to control as well

Back when I used a straight razor my preferences were 5/8 and 6/8. I never used anything larger than that so I might have been way off base back then.

Give me a 6/8 or smaller and I'm happy. I'd rather use a 4/8 than a anything larger than 6/8.

Could someone explain the sizes to me please. I guess I don't get how their measured. Also, what full hollow, half, ect means.

The size, in inches, is the width of the blade from the cutting edge to the top of the blade, known as the spine.

Full hollow, half, etc, refers to how the blade is ground, or from a blank piece of steel how "hollowed" it is, or how much metal is removed

Here are a couple images shamelessly stolen from the internet which should help:
