I just got my first 'nice' badger - a Semogue - and have been researching various brands - the premium Simpsons, Shavemacs and M&Fs - but also the more 'affordable' Ace shaving, Frank Shaving, WSP, Vintage Brands etc.

Both groups seem to have their proponents. Almost everyone loves the premium brand quality but some balk at price. The lower priced group gets praise from some well known experts include Teiste (praises WSP) and GDCarrington (praises Ace knots).

What do you think? Especially interested in views of those who have used brushes in both groups and then settles on one or the other.

I voted both have their place, but am only holding on to two premiums myself, a M&F Emilion and Simpson 58, and maybe only one of those. I started turning my own, and am moving towards all Artisan soaps as well...

Thanks, Eric Blush they are getting better from the first few earlier this year! I love wood handles, but still working on my finishes as I still want to feel the wood, not the finish.

To the OP, I have had some duds from premium brushes, and personally don't care to spend that kind of money and be disappointed. That is what has kept me from buying so many more premium brushes.
Then again, I have bought some dud knots...but not out as much.

Semogue is the only quality brush i need. I have a Simpson that i got in a good deal and 5 Semogue brushes, 730HD, 830, 2000, 2015 and Barbear Clássico Mistura.

For me, they both have their places for me, especially, in my photos! Biggrin
Good luck with your decision, my friend!

Where do you buy your knots? I suppose one of the major problems with non-premium brushes is that it is hard to tell the duds from the champions.
