I was talking with my Dad the other day about my enjoyment of wet shaving and how he needs to get rid of that electric razor of his and join in the fun. Though he wouldn't give up the electric he did send me his old brush and mug that my mother got for him when they first got married in 1977. I have no idea what brand or model the brush is,or if its boar or badger. It's pretty soft hair and a bit floppy and thin. I may end up replacing the knot but we will see.

That knot doesn't look to be in bad shape at all, and looks like badger to me. As you say, you can always swap in a new knot, but I'd give it a few runs to see how it performs as is.

Just use it the way your Mom gave it to your Dad. How cool is that. A keepsake for sure.
