Buy a couple double sided stones, watch a series of youtube videos which I can send you, and then there will be a honemeister in training in Olympia WA.

Now that sounds like a plan! Now how do I find good stones? How do I know what's good or not?

you might try Glen (aka gssixgun on a few of the shave forums). He has some youtube videos and I believe he is in Idaho. there is a contact link on his web page.

I found these videos to be simple and helpful.

Here's an inexpensive starter kit:

Unless you buy a piece of junk razor, you're likely to never use the 220 side, but the 1k, 4k, 8k progression is nice here. You can eventually buy a nice 12k finishing stone.

I'm near Portland, OR. I don't know if I'm considered a "honemeister" since I don't really sell the services. For what it's worth, the only videos I found helpful when I was learning a few years ago were the ones by Glen (gssixgun on youtube). I tried others like Lynn Abrams and just found that they did not actually give you any decent information about what you should be feeling, what the point of each step was, and how to correct little quirks.

I'm actually headed up to Mt Rainier soon, super excited for that little mini-vacation!
