I bought three old Gillettes in May and two finally arrived today. (The third is in town, but I haven't found time to meet up with my friend who graciously hand-carried the razor home.) These are the only vintage Gillettes I have ever seen in the metal, and I am quite excited to give them a spin this week.

Chris Evatt of Razorplate.com replated the '56 Red Tip in nickel. The Fat Tech retains its original finish. It's a very good example of a 1932 Canadian Tech.

A few more obligatory glamour shots. I will post follow-ups on what I think of each, as soon as I'm able to shave a couple of times with each.

I included a Victorinox Swiss Knife in the following shot so folks can estimate the shade of red that Chris used to repaint the knob. I don't know if the shade is true to factory but I am happy with how the Red Tip turned out.

Big thanks to penmanship and windrider for helping me bag these Gillettes.

Later,

Karlo

Thanks!

I've been very curious about how the Red Tip compares in aggressiveness vs a modern razor like the 89, the 34HD or a Weber. Only way to find out was to get one.

Since I've been using a Feather D2 in the past weeks, I will try the Tech first. I've already slipped an Astra into it. Let's see how she drives. Smile

I managed to use the Tech this morning. Some folks say that the Feather derived its head design from this Gillette and based on my first run, I would agree.

It likes a shallower angle vs an 89. The pre-war Tech is supposed to be more aggressive than its descendants but it is unequivocally mild and quite smooth. The Feather is smoother but the Tech has a slightly wider sweet spot.

It is a light razor but balance is great and does not goad you to apply more pressure. Grip texture is better than your typical 89. Very agile handling piece of kit.

With the Astra, I got DFS without needing clean up passes. I'll see how sharper blades fare after I get three shaves from the SP.

wow

Super mild and a "heavy" red.... to ends of the spectrum....

I used a tech as my first de razor..... triangular holes as well... super smooth. and then handed it off to a friend who wanted to get into wet shaving...

great starter....

now I shave with a R41 and never looked back...

Took the Red Tip for a spin today using the Astra I had placed in the Tech. I could feel the increase in aggressiveness but it wasn't harsh in any way. Alum block revealed no sting or burn.

I was concerned that the chunkier head would give me trouble, but no issues were encountered while working the head around my upper lip or jawline. Handling was very good and I really like the grip treatment on the handle.

I'd say efficiency is a hair less than an 89 but it still gave me a DFS in three passes. Heavier than the Tech but I'm liking how these old razors balance in the hand.

I'm beginning to wonder how that TV Special will perform. It should get here soon enough.
