Next week the Navy precision flying team, the Blue Angels, will be here practicing, and on the next weekend, the Seafair celebration with hydroplane races, the team will perform their precision show over our Lake Washington, where there will be many thousands of spectators. I have always loved those flying teams, especially the Angels. When I was a kid I got to see them several times at air shows. And when I was a medical resident I was unlucky enough to be working on call in the big county hospital ER here on Seafair weekend, but the one highlight of an otherwise bad weekend for me was standing on the hospital roof for a few minutes watching the fighter jets go past in formation.

Many years ago my dad was lucky enough to win a drawing and go for a ride with one of the pilots in his jet (at that time an F-4J Phantom, I believe). He was still talking about that, with a twinkle in his eyes, when he was 80. I don't believe they have those drawings any more....

Anyway, their skill amazes me, and I'll be looking forward to seeing and hearing them once again, flying past from a distance.

They put on an awesome show.

I use to work the AeroShell booth every year at the EAA Air Show in Oshkosh before I retired and have ridden with the AeroShell Flying Team several times. Not quit as fast as a jet, but fun just the same. These old war birds put on one heck of a show.

I will be there next Thursday visiting with my old friends and if I can sneak a ride I will.

I saw the Blue Angels twice as a kid in the 70's. They came to the naval base Chase Field in Beeville, Texas. Back then they flew the A-4 Skyhawk. The courthouse in Beeville has one sitting on the front lawn. Enjoy the airshow. Post pictures pleaseBiggrin

Aerobatics is fun Smile

While the RNoAF don't have a dedicated team - we're simply too small - one of our fighter squadrons put together a small team in the 70's:

These days we're mostly doing single ships and pairs... unless we put together a dissimilar formation... like, say, two new(ish) F-16s and an old DH-115 - like we did for the last air show at my base:

Cool! Nothing I miss more than flying with military pilots.

It would be a blast to fly passenger in one of those jets!

I saw the Blue Angels fly a couple weeks ago in Traverse City, MI. It was the fourth time I have seen them and they were just as awesome as the first time. Enjoy the show.

They were just here at Offutt AFB this past weekend. We didn't go though; too hot and too big a crowd. Saw them a lot when I was stationed at NAS Pensacola in the same hanger as they were. Sure glad they got funding back to put on these shows!

Another one who last saw the Blue Angles in the 70s when they flew the A-4 Skyhawk. Great show like aerial ballet which the modern faster jets don't convey as much of.

Been at least 15 years or longer since we had a local airshow. Really enjoyed the Snowbirds at that one too.

Saw them years ago flying F11F-1 Tigers at the Point Mugu airshow. Spectacular even then, I still have a crick in my neck.

The Angels flew by a few minutes ago on their practice runs. Very loud. I love it.

In the early 80's, I was the fill-in medical flight officer for the Blue Angels while they were at visiting El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California to put on a show. I was taken up for a "spin" as a gesture of thanks. I've flown on and off aircraft carriers while in Vietnam nearly a hundred times, but nothing compared to those unforgettable few minutes.

I didn't get to see them from up close this time, just some distant views as they made big sweeping turns, but these images from the official site show what they looked like over Lake Washington here.

And for those wanting their speed on the water, there were the H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes, the fastest race boats in the world, with 3000hp engines and capable of 200mph.
