Does anyone know if Lee's Safety Razor's is still producing the Mergress short handle? I've been on the notification list for well over a year now without an update. I sent them an email a couple of weeks ago but havnt gotten any response back. I've read that at one time if you sent your own Merkur progress to Lee it could be made into a Mergress (retrofitted with a custom steel knob and calibrated for improved adjustment dial accuracy & black adjustment dot indicator). Is this service still available? I would very much like to purchase or have one made. Any suggestions as to what I should do next?

The guy who converts them for retail sales is MER who you can send your Progress directly to him for conversion. I am sorry I don't know his email but go onto B&B and you can find it. I can tell you from experience with the Mergress that aside from the stainless knob the shave is not any better then with a regular Progress. Merkur sets the Progress up pretty good and fairly accurate and no kind of further calibration is going to change the quality of a shave.

I dont no that much about the Digress. Thanks for the tip Slantman, I'm concerned that over time the plastic knob could become brittle.

Ok, so I checked into the Digress. I not very fond of the bress knob and at $166.00 after shipping I would rather have the Mergress. It looks better IMHO and I don't have to pay for international shipping. I'm going to check the B&B forum for the contact infoto MER.

I sent my Progress to Mer, as noted above, his contact info can be found over on B & B. I had him paint the numbers to make it easier to see them without glasses. I didn't like the added weight of the Mergress and ended up selling it off and picking up another Progress. I prefer lighter razors, I like the Muhle 89 over the EJ version, so factor that in to your decision. If you are someone who likes a hefty razor the Mergress is a nice looking razor.

I do like hefty razors with a handle around 3in. I'm not a member of B&B or shavemyface which I have been directed to go to by several members here. I've looked online at different forums and all the info has been transferred by private messages. Ill keep looking.

I was looking into getting a mergress, but after reading a few reports that the metal knob can discolor with use and not match the rest of the razor, I gave up. Much better prefer my progress with the plastic knob can by 2 with price of 1 mergress so no worries. Also I think the yellow knob gives it a cool vintage looking Smile. Not to say the shave is the same as others have reported.

For info, the Digress is available in Brass, Aluminium and Stainless. I have the stainless version and it's a pretty hefty razor. The craftsmanship on the replacement knob is outstanding - completely free of any machining marks.

The regular Progress has a decent amount of heft to it. You could also look at the long handle Progress. As I mentioned in my earlier post, Mergress's are nice looking razors but the Progress is also a great razor without the Mer alteration.

True. I almost had my Progress drop shipped to Mer but decided to run it stock before doing anything else to it. I'm glad I did as I think a metal knob would have changed the balance unfavorably (for my preferences at least.)

Caveman, pm me if you want Mer's email address. I may still have it in my inbox somewhere.

You won't see a big difference in performance. If you don't like the yellow cap reach out to Eric/mer.

Great feedback gentlemen. I do like the plastic knob for the vintage look, my concern is how the plastic will hold up in the years to come. I may buy another later and leave it stock.

The original knob will last for years...can also be tinted or stained...and can be smoothed or polished if you are handy.....never heard of one falling off or cracking unless perhaps it falls on cement or something.

+1 Harvey. The original plastic knob on the Progress will last a long, long time.

Love the original Progresses and their Ivory stands/caps.

...and the plastic knob in all likelihood will last longer than the Zamak that the rest of the razor is made of. Tongue

I actually like the plastic knob and its vintage/retro look, and I have no plans to have mine modified.

I had mine changed to a Mergress and I like the razor a lot better than the original Progress. For me the Progress was too head-heavy; I got the longer knob and it balances the razor better, IMO.

YMMV.

^ My experience is like kingfisher's. The longer knob adds overall weight, the balance point is shifted toward the handle.
