We are a small, close-knit, community here at TSN.
I do respect peoples' privacy and understand if some don't wish to divulge, but also feel that it's beneficial to have certain basic information about members.

My preference is for members to
1. post their location (doesn't have to be specific, i.e. state/province, country)
2. list their first name or nickname in signature

This aids tremendously in terms of knowing who/where my fellow members are, and makes our interactions less impersonal. There is benefit also when contemplating BST transactions, etc.

Just my 0.02 ...

I welcome members' thoughts and opinions here ...

You are absolute right, Ravi. I already had my location but had neglected to add my name to my signature, which I just did. Wink

I totally concur, Ravi.
I have often had to send a PM with merely the intro, "Hello", due to no signature. I wouldn't look upon first name and country as an infringement on right to privacy, rather, more of a benefit to ease of communication.

Right, I guess if I had problem with showing my first name I could make up a name.

You know my thoughts on this Ravi. If I were looking for anonymity, I wouldn't have joined a private online community. I was looking for some camaraderie with like minded people, which sometimes is difficult to initiate if names and or locales are left out. Simply knowing someones name or where they are from makes them more approachable, at least in my opinion. Your point about BST transactions is valid as well. The expectation/frustration of a member getting back to you could be averted if you knew they were likely sleeping because of time zone differences. The Shave Nook is truly a worldwide community, we have members that are 12+ hours apart, it would be helpful to have an idea of location.

Hi Ravi, Signature updated! I agree wholeheartedly with the location request. I find few in my area. and would like to have coffee with someone close to home not..60 miles away!
Thanks for the request.

Agreed, Ravi. I have had my name and location since day 1.

I would love to see an interactive worldwide map on the site where someone could tap his country so we could see how many members come from each place but that is probably just a pipe dream.

I too like to see both a geographic location, even if just a general one, and a name or 'handle' for everyone.

Agree 100% John. It is always nice to call someone by their first name.

And if Richard is ever in Wausau, the coffee is on me. I am over 60 miles away.

Certainly along those lines, Hans. Smile I think it would be great to know where all of us come from because, while most of our members may be from the U.S.A., we have truly grown into a worldwide site.

I wonder if Andrew could set up something like this for us or if it would be too disruptive to the way the site works.

the mybb user who developed that plugin hasn't been around for over a year. unfortunately I'm eliminating any plugins from our site that are not actively developed and maintained for security reasons.

Fair enough, Andrew, but maybe something like it that would be safer and more stable?
