To start my comparison of the earlier Feather AS-D1 and the later AS-D2, I have taken some pictures and done some measurements. Please forgive my lack of photographic skill and accept my measurements as rough figures, since I don't have calipers. In all paired images, the AS-D1 is on the left; in the solo images, it is next to last. The measurements appear to be pretty much identical. The heads are 25mm wide, 43mm long, and 8mm high. Handle length of each is 91mm, and total razor length is 98mm. Total razor weight of each is about 87g. The primary visual differences from the AS-D1 to the AS-D2 are:
- Top cap blade positioning flanges are lengthened and notched
- Top cap blade-holding corners are widened and squared off
- Base plate top surface is widened from 12mm to 13mm
- Base plate slots are lengthened on top, with bottom slot "collars" added
- Handle neck is shortened

Thanks for the comparison. Loved the AS-D2, couldn't get a good shave out of the AS-D1 (probably got one of the bad ones as others love theirs).

Great comparison! I just got the D2 and while more effective than the D1 I used to have, it makes me crave a D3 (or 3.5).

An amazingly smooth and classy razor!

Depends on hair and skin type. I have a fine beard with coarser roots and Asian skin. Even with three days' growth, the D2 works for me but I have to go with a three or four pass shave instead of just two.

I edited my first post to include the fact that the top surface of the base plate was widened from 12mm to 13mm, presumably to hold the blade with its edge at a slightly different angle.

I have a D1, shaved to mild, sent it to Feather Aug, 2012, they made some sort of adjustment. Made it better, but I made it the best with this rubber band shim! Shave as close as my Futur and Progress with the same Feather smoothness!

I posted this on the B&B a while back and got a lot of "how does" questions probably from non Feather owners. If you have a Feather D1 and want to increase the aggressiveness probably to what the D2 is, its simple enough to try.
I never tried any other shim though I have tried the rubber band on top of the blade. Less moving parts with the rubber band as pictured, I clean my razors and wipe them down after every shave.

Pictures really do all the talking here, thank you for the visual walk through. Have always read about the D1 but never saw the side by side to the D2 at this clarity.
The D2 was my first razor I bought when I finally dived deep into DE shaving. Still have it, it would be my every day if I didn't increase the collection Angel

I've never used a D2, my D1 is more aggressive than the DE89 I had,
Comparable to my Futur & Progress.

Thank you for the comparison, John. That was pretty enlightening.

I recently acquired a Feather AS-D2 and I love it. It feels just right. I was contemplating an AS-D1, but I'm not sure that I want something milder than the AS-D2 I already have. Smile

I picked up an AS-D2 just last week. I am loving it. Smooth, mild, comfortable.

Starting Wednesday (two days from now) I will be alternating the D1 and D2 for 6 days, using a single Schick Plus Platinum blade and the same shaving soap each day in order to do a rough comparison of the razors. This will not be scientific at all, just my personal impressions. I have used both in the past and have some general thoughts, but this will be my first direct day-by-day comparison.

By request, here are some images with identical blades installed in the razors. The pictures aren't great, sorry about that. The AS-D1 is on the left again. To my old eyes, it appears that it holds the blade with the edge aimed slightly lower (at a lower angle relative to the axis of the razor handle) than the AS-D2.

I will edit this tally each day to update it. I am using a good shaving soap (vintage Floris No. 89), an excellent but forgiving Schick Plus Platinum blade, and good aftershave (Floris Santal) each day in order to standardize the shaves. The numbers represent scores on a scale of 10.

Day 1 - AS-D1 (1)(Schick 1) - Closeness 5, Smoothness (Friendliness) 9, Overall shave rating 7 (3 passes a many touch-ups gave just a socially acceptable shave.)
Day 2 - AS-D2 (1)(Schick 2) - Closeness 8, Smoothness (Friendliness) 8, Overall shave rating 8 (BBS, but requiring touchups and some hand pressure and giving one small nick.)
Day 3 - AS-D1 (2)(Schick 3) - Closeness 6, Smoothness (Friendliness) 8, Overall shave rating 7 (SAS again, perhaps slightly better due to better technique or blade smoothing.)
Day 4 - AS-D2 (2)(Schick 4) - Closeness 9, Smoothness (Friendliness) 9, Overall shave rating 9 (BBS in 3 passes.)
Day 5 - AS-D1 (3)(Schick 5) - Closeness 3, Smoothness (Friendliness) 7, Overall shave rating 5 (Barely SAS, even with touch-ups.)
Day 6 - AS-D2 (3)(Schick 6) - Closeness 8, Smoothness (Friendliness) 9, Overall shave rating 8.5 (DFS in 3 passes.)
