I have the chance, thanks to a good friend,to try out,two Simpson 57 brushes : one with super badger two band (the "Douglas'),and you can read about it here and this one with best badger hair.

The Simpson "fifty" series are,for me,the best looking ones of this brand and this 57 is not exception.

The measures of this brush are :
  • 22mm knot
  • 46 mm loft
  • Total height around 96 mm

Which makes it a medium size brush, maybe a little bit on the small size, but capable of being a multitask brush, both for facelathering (where it shines) and also for bowlathering, where does a decent job.

Its handle is the most ergonomic that I have tried from Simpson until this day,as well as one of the most classy, elegant ones.I have tried a Simpson 55 too,and both handles are so easy to hold and so comfortable. This is a big plus for me.

Of course,as a good Simpson handle, its sturdy, well made and finish it and with a perfect weight and balance.A Butterscotch color for this handle would be gorgeous...Biggrin

The hair density of this brush is also pretty high, but nothing new when we talk about Simpson shaving brushes. The one that I tried had a knot really well packed (maybe even a little bit overly packed for my taste) with best badger hair. The brush is more packed with hair than the 57 super badger two band, which its normal, since the two band badger its a thicker hair.
This badger hair that Simpson uses on its brushes its,for sure, the best out there when we speak of quality and price.

Here a pic with the 57 "Douglas" super badger two band brush (on the left) and,as you can see,the best badger one has more hair on it :

And here another pic with with it :

Well, after trying both brushes,I really enjoyed the 57 best badger better than the super badger two band one.The best badger one has a better flow and, even when its over densely packed of hair, for my taste, its tips are super soft while keeping certain amount of hair flexibility and backbone, which is not as firm as the super badger two band.
This brush shines when used with shaving soaps/sticks and facelathering, being, for my taste and likes ,better than some other Simpson brushes like the Duke 2 best badger both in face and bowl lathering.
As I said earlier, with bowlathering realizes a good job,not being the best, either the worst,

For 100 bucks this brush its truly a "hidden gem" out there and one of the best looking ones.

Great review. The 57 is a fantastic brush and I've often said, all things considered, Simpsons Best is best!

If you say that,Ben,it must be true. For its price, really hard to beat when compare it with other "high end" badger hair options out there.

Another good review, Teiste. I have both 57s, the Best and the Douglas Super, and I like both of them equally, for different reasons. But the handle truly is one of the best parts of this particular brush.

And I remember that I got a 55 from you, with a Pre Vulfix handle, and it was a nice little brush too.I should write about it soon.

Yes, I'd like to see that review. I think the 55 would be a great brush for face lathering.

My shelf has about twenty brushes. However, the 57 two band "Douglas" is The brush I reach for most often.

Ben,

I've a 57 in Manchurian right in front of me ...

It's shouting ...

"Send me to WA"
