A beautiful Chubby 2 arrived from the Isle of Man last week, this has to be one of the best knots I've seen in a while. The 2 band hair is very fine and soft to the touch, it seems to be finer than previous Simpson 2 bands.

I will shave with it tomorrow and give some feedback compared to my other Simpson 2 bands.

Following on from yesterday's post, here are my impressions of the Simpson Chubby 2 in Two-Band silvertip. Today’s shave was with MdC Fougere. Before I get into it, if you read the posts in this thread by fellow Shavenookers, lucky enough to secure the latest version of this brush, the superlatives include amazing, superb and outstanding.

With the CH2 in Two-Band Silvertip, after 15-20 seconds of loading I had a perfectly loaded brush. I started to build the lather by using circular motions and literally had to stop myself to check the brush. The tips were so soft and so fine, I honestly thought for a few seconds I had picked up and was using this:

Yes, the tips are that soft!! Thankfully I was using the Two-Band and not the Synthetic, after all, what’s the point of spending so much money to realise you may as well have purchased the Synthetic (more on that later).

Pressing the brush with a little more pressure, the knot began to gently give way and splay to reveal gentle scrubbiness with medium-firm backbone. I could feel the fineness of the hair and I have to say face-feel is perfect. I will say the knot was a little bit of a lather hog, however I believe this will change and she’ll release more lather after a few uses.

Compared to the M7 Two-Band from late 2012, the hair is different. Aside from the difference in knot size 23mm vs 28mm and obviously more density, the newest rendition of the CH2 in Two-Band has different characteristics. The tips are finer, the hair shafts are smoother and more oily compared to my older M7 and Duke 3 in Two-Band. The old hair is coarser and when wet squeaks when you rub your fingers against the hair shafts, much like when you wash your hair and check for the squeak.

Neither hair is better than the other, just different. I don’t have the older CH2 in Two-Band, however it was mentioned they were lacking a little in backbone. I can assure any prospective acquirer, this is not the case here. This brush has perfect backbone, firm but not too firm.

Compared to the CH2 in Synthetic, the Two-Band’s extremely soft tips was a real surprise. I just didn’t expect the tips to be just that soft. What was also a surprise was just how good the latest version of the Simpson Synthetic was. Mine has a loft of 53mm and it’s an excellent performer. The real difference, aside from face feel, is the Two-Band will gently splay and stay splayed with great face feel, whereas the Synthetic will splay however will spring back while making circular lather motions. One then has to press slightly firmer to maintain the splay. That said the CH2 Synthetic generates lather near instantaneously and is a veritable bargain. I do feel the knot could be increased to 55mm loft without sacrificing anything.

As you can probably tell, I’m really impressed by this Chubby 2 in Two-Band Silvertip. It seems Simpsons took their time to source the latest version of Two-Band to their standards and the wait has definitely paid off. This brush is currently my favourite in my Den.

Thanks for reading.

Michael

I thought the Simpsons custom was to name the old stock production two-bands as "Super Badger," and custom or limited edition two-bands as well as super badger brushes as "Silvertip."

Ditto.

I just received mine this past week, and agree that this CH2 2-band is outstanding.

Congratulations to an iconic brush! It is also good to hear latest 2 band is as good as the famed soft tipped before.
Though I rival yours for the "best knot".... Biggrin
