Hello everyone,
I am looking to buy a Vintage Gillette Adjustable. I haven't had any luck with the ebay auctions over the past few weeks and thought I'd post something here.
I plan on using it, so looking for something that is in decent condition, or that can be cleaned up to decent or great.
look forward to any and all interactions.

If you want a better shaver at a similar cost go for a Merkur Progress it really does shave better..I have 4 different Gillette adjustibles..hardly ever use them and truly they are just 4 show at this time..the Gillettes are very mild even set at 6,7 ,8 or 9 ..nice to have but really no big deal on the shave. A Weber is a better shaver ..only $55.00 and shaves better..is built better and you will probably use it more than ANY Gillette ever built..buy them to collect but not to use.The Progress is the best adjustible out there for the money..easy to get and easy to maintain.Hope this will help.

Did not mean to imply that Gillettes are not well built or designed...they are and if there is any complaint it is because they are on the mild side as compared to Merkur . Probably this was for legal reasons or safety concerns...to each their own and eventually we all find our shaving nirvana. Again they (Gillettes ) are excellent and were proudly made in America and have stood the test of time...many of mine are from 1920,s and such. I still use a Sensor or Fusion to touch up neck and cheek !!!!!!

The advantage of an adjustable razor is when dialed down it is gentle and gives more flexibility in your shaving method...otherwise you have to find one of the non adjustable that is the way you like it and spend lots of money to test many brands and types of razors....if you like to collect razors go that route..if you just want a daily shaver buy an adjustable .

Harvey, I have always been of the understanding that Merkur adjustables are adjustable but aggressive at every setting (especially the Futur).
What I have never seen a clear answer to is how gentle the Progress is at low settings. Is it much gentler than a fixed-head Merkur?
Thanks -

Murray...I find the Progress at 1 to be milder than a 34C. The Futur at 1 is more efficient than the HD but smoother in my opinion. In other words, I can remove more stubble with the Futur at 1 than with an HD but without any irritation. YMMV and all that.

I agree..a Progress on 1 is nice and smooth BUT you can then dial up to a 2 or 3..I like 2 1/2 just perfect for me... A Futur is different..requires more caution in loading, unloading, adjusting and holding..can be dangerous if you are not carefull..because of my RAD I have tried every razor known to man and learned a lot by trial and error and in blowing mucha dinero (lotsa money)...again a reasonable investment for the basic Progress..start there and for shaving purposes you can probably stop there..if you like it get a Mergress or a custom knob ( i have an Ikon long handle and a Bobs standard handle..extra knobs) as well as a Mergress, and first issue Progress and and a couple of customs..but I,m a collector and nobody needs that many.

A mergress is a Merkur Progress with an adjustment knob modified by MER. Can be purchased at LEES Razors complete when in stock (which is rare) or you can see a link on Badger and Blade under MER which will direct you to his site....basically a steel knob not plastic with some minor tuning of adjustment numbers..just looks better..does not shave any better.(Ikon and Bobs razor works have also made knobs in the past)
