We had a house guest - old school so they gave us a hostess gift. It is the automated tea maker mentioned in the title.

It comes with a base. A kettle and lid and a tea leave basket plus it's lid.

You put the tea leaves in the basket, put the lid on and slide the basket onto a vertical rod in the tea kettle.

Put the kettle lid on and program the base.
It has settings for green, black, white, herbal or oolong teas.
When you make a selection it automatically sets a water temerature and a brew time. There is also a selector for mild, medium or strong brewed. You can set and/or adjust the temp and brew time yourself to customize the tea.

There is also a clock so you can auto-brew like most coffeemakers.

When you press start the water heats to the desired temperature. Then the basked is magnetically lowered down the vertical rod until it is in the hot water. It automatically goes to the appropriate height for the volume of water you put in the kettle. I don't know how it does thisHuh

At the end of the brew time the basket magnetically (magically) raises up out of the water, the machine beeps and your tea is steeped and ready.

I used this for the first time today. I think making tea is a simple operation. But this gizmo is pretty cool.

Edit - I went to Amazon to read reviews and GULP the thing is $250.
Two things come to mind. I am not sure anyone needs a $250 tea maker and two - I have to be much nicer to those guestsSmile

Kevin,
I would never have purchased this on my own. That said - I love the thing. It makes great tea! It is especially helpful for weekend breakfasts. Set it and forget it. One less thing to worry about.

I use it much more than I ever expected to. In fact I requested a bunch of loose tea for Christmas just because of this gizmo.

Mine is terrible.  The basket doesnt allow water to circulate enough to get a good brew.  It goes down. It comes back up.  Much of the leaf in the basket is still dry.   We had high hopes...
We use it to boil water and steep on our own.  For that its great : /

I got mine on Craigslist for $40. I freaking love it. We use it a bunch for green tea because it's stupid proof. I really like the auto dunk feature for agitating the tea as well when I'm wanting something extra strong!

I'd totally buy one for $40. The MSRP? No way.
