Hi all,

I am looking to purchase my first high end brush. I am a relatively new to wetshaving so I don't have much experience with a wide range of brushes so I would be grateful for some advice from you kind folk. At the moment I am using a whipped dog silvertip. The factors that are important to me and my thoughts are as follows:

1. Most importantly, the brush must be soft as I have sensitive skin and if it is too scritchy the brush causes all sorts of irritation;

2. I face lather almost exclusively;

3. I use both creams and soaps;

4. There is much talk in relation to the importance of the backbone of a brush. I don't have vast experience with different brushes so can't compare backbone of different brushes. My only concern is that if there is too much backbone then it might make the brush too abrasive on my skin, causing irritation. Perhaps those with sensitive skin can chime in.

5. I have relatively small hands, so don't want a huge handle.

From my research, I read only praise for Thater brushes so I am looking seriously at buying one. There is also almost unanimous praise for simpson chubbies in Super, but they are quite a bit more expensive than thater.

I am therefore inclined to go for a thater 4125/1 3 band silvertip. Taking into account the above, would you think this is a sensible choice?

Thanks as always.

Thaters are extremely soft brushes. My concern with ordering a 3-band Thater silvertip is that it may be too similar to your Whipped Dog. The backbone on a 2-band Thater isn't as stiff as a 2-band Rooney, Shavemac, Simpson, etc., but it would give you a different shaving experience than the WD and might be a nice first step into the realm of 2-band brushes.

I believe all WD knots are bulbs, so you might want to consider a fan, which will have a softer face-feel.

I'd go for a Thater 2 band over a 3 band. Extremely soft tips with great flow through. I prefer thater bulbs to fans. The fans just seem to splay too much.

Thaters are great. I liked mine much more than the Chubby I had and sold. I have a 2 band but think their three bands may be even better.

I think the brush you mentioned is an excellent choice. I would suggest to go with a bulb shape, but that's simply my own preference chiming in

If you like soft go for the 3 band. I have no trouble lathering soaps with 3 band. I have a bulb so maybe that helps. Wonderful brush very soft, great through and makes plenty of lather.

Thanks to all for your advice. Saw the above and was about to make a purchase on BST, not least of all because they don't come up too often on BST, but then managed to control the AD in me to first do a little more homework and post my questions. My concern with the Thater being sold on BST is that it is 2 band and given that it costs a fair bit of change I didn't want to make the wrong purchase.

I'll continue to do some more reading but I am leaning towards the 3 band bulb.

What they say. Smile

I have a Thäter 3-band silvertip in bulb shape (49125/1) and I love it. It is extremely soft, however it has enough backbone to lather hard soaps. Great flow-trough also.

My Thater 3 band is the one I love the most out of all of my brushes. Enough backbone for hard soaps, wonderfully soft tips.

I also have quite sensitive skin.

Pushed the button on a Thater 4125/1 3 band bulb, with the black handle. Can't wait for it to arrive. Thanks again for the advice.

Congrats! I hope it meets your needs and preferences.

Be warned, though, that it may lead to SBAD. Wink

Indeed, that was an excellent choice. I really love my 3-band Thäter. Wonderfully soft hooked tips, excellent flowtrough and enough backbone to deal with hard soaps.

I really hope that it suits you well. Smile

Excellent choice! I may be the odd one out, but I prefer the Thäter 3 band over the 2 band.

I hope you find it to your liking and you enjoy it
