Having gotten my memory jogged (thank you John) I recall reading about these years and years ago... well before I had access to the internet.

Never realised how amazing and frightening the construction was though... you can almost imagine how cramped and claustrophobic it must have been underground for those poor guys - just waiting for a high explosive to seal the exits, or a gas attack to fill their rooms with clouds of death.

Also, someone there was a mason Biggrin

My Grandad used to talk about making 'breathing ways' for the underground...I always thought he meant the French underground...Puts it all together now...
