Hello Friends!

I've changed my avatar in honor of my dad, who on this date in 1975 was honorably discharged from the USMC after having served 25 years, (before that he served 20-years in the US Army, some during WWII). That last 5-years he served as Funerary Specialist arranging funerals and other dedicatory services for our Fallen Heroes.

My dad will turn 93 in January and is still as red-blooded as any American Patriot I've ever known. He taught me very young that you stop and salute (or put your hand over your heart), taking off your hat (no matter if it is raining or cold) when you hear our National Anthem. He has shown us that anything is possible if enough people are willing to sacrifice their cushy lives in defense of our great nation and way of life. He fought the Japanese Imperialists, but NEVER harbored bad feeling toward the Japanese - he has owned Japanese and American cars since the early 70's...He loves to visit Japan, and France.

My dad emigrated to the USA from Cuba at the start of WWII and joined the Army soon-after. He LOVED American Servicemen and Women, and America in general, they gave Cuba a livelihood that they would not have otherwise been able to enjoy.

He reluctantly and seldom spoke about his service, but I have heard others talk about him and know that he served honorably - I also know that he could out drink just about anybody up until he stopped drinking hard liquor at the age of 85.

He routinely goes down to the Airport to await Marines and other service men and women and give them each a hearty Welcome Home and a "Thank you" Challenge Coin...Sometimes he buys them a round of drinks, especially the ones shipping out. It used to embarrass me growing up, but now I understand the loneliness that comes with deployment...

Thanks, Dad for all your sacrifices...I didn't always understand why you weren't home, but I do now.

Semper Fidelis, my hero, my teacher, and my brother!

Why is the keyboard getting blurry?

Sounds like a great Dad and patriot!

Reminds me of those in my family who served in WW2 and I never even acknowledged; to my detriment. They weren't too busy to interrupt their lives, and put them on the line, to rid the world of evil. They also knew what a salute meant and the respect it should convey, as I do.

That was a better generation, mostly. Though some of that still lives. In you if no where else. For anyone to meet him would be an honor.

What a great man your father is. I had a grandfather who was a career Army man. He was very proud of his service as were we.

Tell your dad that there are those of us out here who appreciate all he did and continues to do!
