I am excited to receive the first custom offering from new artisan brushmaker Matt Zettl. I have long loved the look of wooden brush handles, but have shied away from them for the most part due to concerns about long term durability and water damage. Subconsciously (and for shame) I tend to avoid the wooden handle brushes I do have for this reason in favor of resin handled brushes. Well in a recent posting I noticed that Matt had addressed this potential problem by resin stabilizing the blanks followed by multiple coats of CA on the finished handle. There are brushmakers that do one or the other, but I do not believe both. This new technique combined with the wonderful aesthetic of his to date mostly two-tone wooden creations prompted me to reach out to him to commission my "grail" brush, a tulip in wenge wood.

Wenge is my favorite type of wood but it does not appear that easy to source blanks in the proper size, and at least one artisan has in the past voiced concern over turning this type of wood as it tends to splinter and chip. Matt assured me it would not be a problem and once we had agreed to go forward, in no time I received a nice progress report:

Matt resin stabilized three turning rods in wenge. Next he created a template for a tulip brush based on my specifications. Finally, marking the high and low points on the rod.

Ooh, looks good, real good! All that's left to do is apply the multiple coats of CA finish and wait for the knot to arrive. 24 mm finest fan knots must be popular, they always seem to be out of stock at TGN.

Voila! The finished masterpiece. After some wrangling, decided to have Matt set the 24 mm TGN finest fan knot at a little higher loft than I normally go with, around 51 mm, for variety's sake.

The experience working with Matt has been top notch. The artisan brushmakers have set a high standard, and Matt has definitely reached it in my book. He kept me updated every step of the way, and always solicited my feedback. I think his communication and attention to detail are very impressive. And the gorgeous end product speaks for itself. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Matt if you would like to have a nice wooden handled brush turned to your exact specifications. And the usual disclaimer, I have no affiliations with the artisan other than being an extremely happy customer with a "grail" type brush.

The artisan's coin inlaid at the base. Nice retro feel.

That is stunning, truly one of the most beautiful wood shaving brushes I have seen. Classic, simple, yet immaculately detailed. Congratulations and tell Matt he's going to be busy if he keeps this level of quality up

Stunning brush and clearly a great deal of care taken. I would like to know the handle finish takes to water.

That is a nice brush - I also love wenge and that brush would go nicely in my wenge bathroom.

Any contact details for Matt?

Bill, that's a beautifully proportioned handle, the finish Matt put on it really makes that handle pop.

I don't blame you on being a little bit concerned about using wood as a shaving brush. That's been my concern even though those are considered denser woods. Really impressed with the steps taken to stabilize the wood.

Great commission and thx for sharing!
