According to Mark (mantic59) Merkur (Dovo) has discontinued making the Vision. I had hoped they would continue to make it but in a smaller version.

They don't know what they want, but they know how to get it.

That is actually old news. It was discontinued awhile ago.

That is crazy talk...the Progress is one of the best selling Merkur razors...just behind the 34C.

The Vision and Futur were the items that first led me into DE, as I saw them on Amazon. I was having serious issues with cartridges and was trying to find viable alternatives. I'd always loved the vintage Gillettes but didn't think for a second there'd be either any left, or in shave ready condition. Was I the only one that thought this?
I did searches for the Merkur razors and came upon these forums. Before I thought I could get Fatboys, Super Speeds, etc, I would have probably bought a Futur but reviews weren't great. I thought they were pretty cool looking......until I found out I could get Gillettes. I wouldn't have a Futur or Vision now, my Gillettes are better in every way. The videos of them being made only reinforced my thoughts.

The Progress is in a different league to its more complicated and less attractive bigger brothers. It follows the vintage Gillette designs, making it quite attractive. The Mergress (and the other modification which escapes me right now) is a real looker. Would be nice in plated brass or stainless though.

Too bad as the Vision is the best DE razor made. Okay, okay, I know Zamac, too big, ungainly, difficult to clean, fragile, etc. etc. etc. It simply out shaves anything else. With the caveat IMO but out of about 130 razors I have tried it is the only one I would choose if I had to only have 1. Fits perfectly in the hand, would drown out the sound of any other DE which provides instant feedback and personifies what a razor is....a tool. This is the big tool that can be as mild or aggressive as you can stand.

i think you misunderstood phil. i meant the company as a whole, and nothing to do with the razor model progress. guess i'm overly nostalgic, so perhaps it is me that have lack of progress...

I, for one, am not sad to see it gone! I had never liked the design of it. Angel

I had a Vision but had to sell it. For whatever reason, it had a habit of biting me even when on a mild setting. It was also huge and would not fit any of my razor stands. You practically need a tool belt for the thing.

I owned a Vision sold it, and had regrets, so I bought another one. After about six months, the adjuster would no longer work. I obtained instructions for repairing it, did my best, but couldn't get the job done. I think that if I could find another used one in really good shape at an affordable price, I'd buy it.

I watched the how its made vid on the Vision, and the threaded teflon washers screamed eventual fatigue and failure. I'm still looking for the right Mergress...

On that note, how long until we see a "proper" machined stainless steel adjustable razor? I think it's only a matter of time now.

I think the story has ended that way for many folks which may be why the razor has been discontinued.

I still have one packed away. Maybe the value will go up on them now?

I always thought the Vision was a one hundred thousand dollar solution in search of a 50 dollar problem.

I still think someone should do a stainless steel version or a brass version of the Progress! Biggrin
