Just curious as to how many passes everyone uses in reference to the type of cartidge used. I am thinking that the more blades, then the less passes. When I use a Gillette Mach 3 I usually do 2 passes, 1 WTG and 1 ATG. I have also done 1 WTG with a DE and then 1 ATG with the Mach 3 because of the tug/pull of the cartridge on the first pass. My normal DE shave has 4 passes so the Mach 3 does save time and does give a comfortable, quick shave.

in my former life when i used cartridges i always used 1 pass, not matter what kind it was. wtg, atg etc were unknown to me. nowadays i use a de razor and use 2 passes, both wtg, no touch ups.

I only head shave now, so sometimes i use a cartridge and most others, a DE. For the carts, i use the Gillette twin and always do 3 passes. I love having an absolute bbs-head. The same occurs when I wet shave. I just need it super smooth in order to feel like I've done the job justice.

I don't differentiate between my Mach3, Sensor or de: it's always three passes. I do, however, take more time with a de to avoid cuts and weepers. Also, there are a few spots that are difficult to get with the de so I touch up with my Mach3 or Sensor.

With all cartridges I have used in the past four decades (Wilkinson Boned, Gillette Trac II and Wilkinson WII, Gillette Sensor, Gillette Mach 3, Schick Quattro, Schick Hydro, and others I have forgotten, no doubt), it always has been one-pass plus touch up for me. When I back-leveled from a Schick Hydro 5 to a Schick Hydro 3 a year or two ago, I saw and felt no difference except in the pocketbook.

I tried my first modern cart last year, a Fusion Pro-Glide and I had to do 3 passes with touch-ups just to get a passable shave and, even then, it still seemed I had barely shaved. I kind of envy those folks who only need to do 1-2 passes. Blush

I used to do 2 passes and a touch up (or two). I always had irritation and ingrown hairs. Now I usually do the same but with little to no irritation and ingrown hairs.

I rarely use a cartridge razor. However, when I do it takes me the the same number of passes as a DE - 3 plus a touchup on my chin and upper lip.

Always three, regardless of DE, SE, or cartridge type. I use the same technique every time.

A single one mixed pass for me (XTG/ATG) plus some touch-ups, using Mach 3, every day shaving, early in the morning. Comfortably DFS results.

My experience mirrors Ricardo's, except I use carts a little more frequently (1x a week, sometimes 2x).
