This recent purchase is a little bit of a mystery. Is it a 1953 45 Set, or is it a Coronation set from the same year? It has the 45 Set case, but has the Coronation Set insert. Could it be an early-run Coronation Set? There is no crown on the case, and the case design (print on outside lid) looks like the ordinary 45 Set:

Here is the Gillette 45 Set from Mr Razor, and the link below that shows the Coronation Set. Compare the cases:

If you look at the ad for the Coronation series (13 June, 11 days after the 2 June 1953 Coronation of Elizabeth) you'll see that the 45 set is open and you can't see the outside lid (is there a crown stamped there?) and neither is there an insert in the lid:

So, then, do I have an early-run Coronation Set?

I'm not sure if the paper insert could have been moved into another case but it seems unlikely.

I agree with your theory about this being a variation of the 45 Coronation set.

It may have been moved from another case, who knows, in order to pass it off as a Coronation Set, bearing in mind that the 'original' set (had there been one) would have retained the crown on the case and therefore its integrity as a 'Coronation Set'. Had it been a cynical ploy, it would have meant two sets; one genuine and one, well, let's call it 'ostensible' set. But would someone be so devious? I'm not certain. Going on the advertising poster, I lean toward 'early run' (or 'out of stock' run and compromise as required) version.

The evidence would be to uncover another, similar set to mine, but it might prove a hill too far.

People, don't be afraid to comment. Feelings don't enter into such analysis; speculation supersedes. Feel free.
