UPDATE: It's been pointed out that straight-razor shavers might have systematically different responses---for example, some straight razor users don't shave against the grain, and in particular shaving the upper lip ATG with a straight razor seems foolhardy, though with a DE razor it is not at all difficult (though some find the stubble on their upper lip too tough and/or the skin too sensitive to shave ATG there---and in fact on the XTG pass I shave my upper lip (and lower lip and chin) both directions XTG to make the ATG pass more pleasant.

But I'm going to assume that the responses are from DE shavers. /UPDATE

I just came across the advice that one should shave ONLY WTG. Now, nothing in shaving works for everyone, and I readily believe that there are some (few) who can successfully shave WTG.

But I have the strong impression that the substantial majority use a three-pass shave, with the XTG pass reducing the stubble further before the ATG pass, the general rule being that you want the stubble reduced as much as possible before shaving ATG---and thus there's even a four-pass shave.

But I got to wondering, and so a poll. I really should have separate polls, one per experience range, but this should provide a general idea.

If you shave in a pattern other than one listed, I would be interested in your description.

I wish I could have added level of experience---e.g., is the responder's experience measured in:

EDIT: Oops: forgot WTG WTG WTG. I bet some do that.

Hi Michael,

I shave WTG/XTG (depends on the area) followed by ATG and have been double or single edge shaving for about 6 years.

My father always said to me you should shave only WTG but I found that I prefer WTG, XTG then ATG. Thou he never aim for BBS or DFS just for passable shave so if I wanted that I would go with WTG WTG and WTG

I've been traditional shaving for over 15 years. For many years I did the 3 pass...WTG-XTG-ATG and I was shaving maximum every other day.

Now, I shave 2 pass, WTG-XTG and occasional ATG touch ups and I am able to shave everyday Biggrin

With and across depending on the area, aggression of the razor, age of the blade and if I'm getting any irritation or not.

WTG, XTG always in only two passes. I used to do more passes, but discovered I was doing way more harm then good by chasing the BBS.

I also advise that men not try for a BBS shave, but I mean by that, not to avoid a BBS shave, but just let a BBS shave happen when it will. The focus should be on what you are doing at the time and trying to do it well, not being all thinking about the outcome (since that leads to trying too hard, with pressure, bad blade angle, etc.). But if a BBS happens, welcome it.

If you follow this course the BBS result will very gradually happen more frequently---just about at the same rate your skill improves, interestingly Smile. Right now the majority of my shaves are BBS, but I'm not trying for it. I just know now how to shave my own face---its grain pattern, tricky spots, etc.

shave daily except never on Sunday

I don't know the source of the advice. It simply did jibe with my own experience or the reported experience of many shavers, but then I realized it would be easy (and, I think, interesting) to check via a poll.

1 WTG + 1 ATG. I have a light to moderate beard, and it only takes me two passes for BBS.

2 pass WTG/XTG with some buffing at end if needed.

Started DE shaving (never did multi-pass while cartridge shaving) about 2 years ago.

Been wet shaving for a year now. Found what works best for me is WTG, ATG, XTG. Some places on my neck kind of go circular so different angles.

WTG XTG ATG. Wet shaving with DE/injector for 1 year, but was already doing a 2-pass (WTG ATG) with cartridges for over 20yrs and knowing that a single pass just wasn't enough (despite all the commercials that seemed to indicate that it was)

Wet shaving for over 3 years. Daily shave except on Sunday's, going WTG then XTG then touch up. Usually results in BBS or really DFS
