I began my morning regimen safely enough. Pyewacket was fed, tea brewed, meditation and then to shave while listening to the radio.
Doctor Dubia Christian of the Liberian Health Ministry was giving an update on the quickly forgotten EBOLA outbreak in Africa. It is slowing after the influx of aid; largely US and Cuban.
Then he goes and disrupts my middle American complacency.
the strongest theory for this outbreak is increased human and fruitbat contact brought about by monoculture Palm Oil plantations. The flowers attract their pollinators(bats) in greater population numbers.
Great, just great; Where is Ralph Nader when I need his advice? I look at my soaps and try to recall which ones are sustainable production. Palm Oil is a major crop for sub-Saharan peoples who need the income.
Then I look at my tallow and my own first hand experience with factory farming and methane emission level graphs.
It's enough to drive one to catatonic inaction.
I grab my almost gone sliver of MWF and play the following music.

Grow a beard, I guess. Confused

The tallow is a by-product of an industry that's never going away, methane or otherwise. To my way of thinking, it makes more sense than palm oil-based stuff, and it lathers better, too.

There are a lot of new non-tallow soaps that don't have palm oil at all; in fact, most of them don't. They're largely saponified stearic acid and coconut oil. LASS, Beer Soap Brewing Co, Tiki, and a bunch of others. So maybe those would be a good choice for you?

Kav, you could just use the soaps that have been mentioned as they are very good.
You could always use a straight with a good lubricant for a one-pass shave! Biggrin

Unfortunately, stearic acid is derived mostly from coconut or palm oil. So there is likely still palm involved.

While I'm on your side of the fence on this entirely, I just want to comment that most stearic acid comes from palm (and beef... though if beef, they usually say it's "tallowate" instead of "stearate" or "stearic acid").

EDIT: oooops, I didn't see that Eric (sp?) had already replied!

My post was tongue-in-cheek; a very bad practice while actually shaving. I am VERY concerned about many issues
and conscious of my own impact. Reality is EVERY choice
has pros and cons and overall a conscious consumer's cumulative impact is reduced.
Note how Don Draper's embrace of simplicity and clean lines
looks VS our nameless one embracing his inner Oscar Wilde.
Beards are NOT an option.

Just eat more bacon. No it absolutely has nothing to do with any of this but bacon just makes everything better.

But only free range, traditionally cured smokehouse bacon. Pigs are a highly intelligent animal deserving a decent life before slaughter.
I was on a hunt on a formerly private channel island. The nimrods were blazing away so randomly I literally threw myself to the ground as bullets wizzed overhead. I saw another hunter do the same to my right. I said 'this was
NOT in the brochure'! He grunted in agreement. Eventually
everyone moved on and I sat up. My fellow survivor did to-
and trotted off.

You just solved the worlds problems. If I don't get some form of pig with my breakfast my day is ruined. Wink

As for as shaving soaps go, if it does not irritate my face, I use it.

KAV, I do like your choice of music.
