I have used soaps because that's what my wife got me when i got my straight razor and just bought another because it works well. Between soaps and creams is it a preference thing or can someone tell me some differences.

Thanks to the world of Artisan Soaps you can get a shaving soap with fewer and more natural ingredients than the vast majority of creams out there. I love soaps for this reason.

Creams generally require less time and effort to lather as you don't need to spend time loading on a puck and they start bubbling up into a dense lather very quickly. I have only found a few creams that I particularly enjoy, however.

It's mostly preference. I'm a soap guy.

I never found much love for creams, not sure why. I do have a couple tubes in the drawer, but they don't get used very often. Soaps for me.

I like both soaps and creams. I will use a cream if I am pressed for time or feeling lazy. I get the same performance from both.

Hard soaps, soft soaps, creams... I like 'em all.

If you have hard water, soft soaps and creams may perform better than hard soaps - YMMV off course.

I don't like to generalize. I use both creams and soaps and judge them on their individual merits.
Saying soaps work best is not a true statement. Saying creams work best is not a true statement.

I have both. I switch between the two, but I find myself using the soap more often. There are a lot of soaps out there to choose from.

When I first got into wet shaving, I only used creams and never even heard of soaps. Maybe the scents have drawn me more towards soaps.

The only cream that remains in my rotation is Speick, all other (and I confess having several) are soaps.

I use both and enjoy both. Variety! Neither is better or worse.

I'm a soap guy, perhaps because I'm also a brush guy. I find the process of using a brush satisfying and soaps make your brush "put out" more, so to speak.

I like Proraso creams. The Green seems to be favored by many people. I enjoy using it during the warmer weather. However, make me choose between that and the Red, i prefer the Red for what i perceive as a slicker feel, and, the scent of the Red sends me to a special place. Proraso Blue is liked by some for the skin feel, but there is something about the scent i personally don't get on with too well. ymmv of course.

* Al's Shaving creams
* Tabula Rasa (cream/soft soap)

These would be my choices.

I use it all these days.

Used to be more a cream and croap guy.

Soaps tend to dry my skin out more, but now I just superlather my creams and soaps and problem with dry skin from soaps solved almost

I like TOBS Sandlewood for cream. I started using Cella(croap) and its pretty easy to lather with enough water. Then again my water is really soft!!Biggrin

I started my wet shaving adventure with creams because they were supposed to be easier to lather. Later, I switched because I preferred the creamy, rich face feel of a good tallow soap. I also found that my favorite soaps left my skin more nourished and moisturized. Now I use soaps exclusively.

Soaps for me. I like the ritual, and I've not had an issue with dryness with the soaps I've used thus far.
