I have 1 Merkur open comb. Its a great shaver ....... but I can't find it listed anywhere. It has an HD handle with an open comb head. I prefer it to the 34C. Perhaps some else can shed light on the model number?

The 11C is my favourite OC Merkur, closely followed by the 41 (Classic 1904 OC)...

The Merkur 11C is the best since its the HD only with an OC. Merkur stopped making them but they are still available here and there.

Another 11C vote here Andrew. As a matter of fact I had put mine away some time ago when I learned that they were discontinued, so naturally I had to get it out.Biggrin

It's certainly the best of the Merkur OCs.

I guess it's off to the bay to see if I can find a decent deal on an 11c HD then!

Andrew,
i would not dismiss the 1904. It is a fantastically mild shaver!

I'm in favor of 1904. The handle is heavy solid, looks nice retro, and can use another handle with the head.

the 1904 seems cheaper and easier to find.

Not to sidetrack the thread but, how does a 11c compare aggressive wise to a Gillette New? Been thinking about buying a 11c, because my 2 Gillette OC are gold and I want to keep them that way.

I have had the 11C and the 1904 Model 41 OC. The Merkur open comb I like the best is the Gillette NEW. In fact, the only Gillettes I really like are the various versions of the NEW (New Standard, New Deluxe, Long tooth NEW, and Short tooth NEW). YMMV.

Any Merkur Open Comb is going to be milder than a Gillette New. Merkur Open Combs are among the mildest of all the open combs (Goodfellas are milder IMO)

I'll chime in here. It took me a while to find my 11G (the gold one). It's a good razor, but I don't reach for it like my Goodwill, New or Joris. I think it's the blade angle. More effort required to get a great shave with it in comparison. I almost never use my 1904OC, handle is too small for me.

I was also wondering if there are any differences between the few OC models, performance wise. Strictly head performance differences. I understand 15c and 25c have a skinny handle (that I do not like), I understand there are preferences re. nickel vs chrome finish and handle size and shape (1904 vs 15c.25c). They all seem to have the same head (geometry at least). Can someone with experience conform this?

I noticed no difference. All the Merkurs are mild (which isn't a bad thing). They all have the same head (I think). To me the 11C was the nicest (due to the HD Handle), but they all shaved the same to me (and I've tried the 11C,1904, 15C, and 25C)
