A (very) good friend gave me this brush, as the brush had too much scritch for him. It also had far too much scritch for me (red hair, pale skin, freckles, etc).

Height: 100mm / Loft: 53mm / Base: 47mm / Knot: 20mm

I asked him if it was ok! for me to re-knot the brush (as I loved the look of the handle), and offered to send it back to him once I had completed the re-knot. He was fine with the re-knot and said the brush was mine to keep and do as I please with...

After removing the black badger knot I was left with a 21mm diameter knot hole, therefore I could have probably squeezed in a 20mm knot, but instead I decided to go with a TGN 18mm 2-Band Finest F2 badger knot.

Personally I think I ended up with a much nicer looking brush and most importantly (at least to me) I ended up with a brush I could actually use and enjoy...

Height: 91mm / Loft: 46mm / Base: 45mm / Knot: 18mm / Knot hole diameter: 21mm / Knot hole depth: 14mm

Mike, that is very nice. I know you will enjoy that brush now. I too have a size 10 pure black badger Plisson and it does have a lot of scritch to it. I try my best to mainly use brush strokes with it.

Johnny, you're a (much) better man than me Euro

Yes I did, as I felt it was no longer a Plisson brush after re-knotting it. Plus, I removed the (gold colour) metal ring from around the top of the knot hole -- as personally I am not a fan of that detail...

What made you go with a 18mm knot vs a 20mm knot?

Hi

A number of reasons:
  • Some outlined here...
  • The handle had a knot hole depth of 14mm and I didn't feel I could safely deepen the hole without possibly ruining the handle.
  • The particular 18mm TGN knot I selected/used had and overall height of 60mm, while 20mm TGN knots have an overall height of 65mm ie I didn't want to end up with a final loft height of +50mm, as I personally don't think the size of the handle supports (looks good with) a loft height of +50mm.

Take care, Mike
