Hello All,

I am in a dilemma choosing between the vielong silver tip vs the shavemac 2 band silveritp for a custom brush. if anyone used/own both can shed some light on the differences it would be very helpful.
i am a face latherer, i like soft tips with good backbone, density and flow through.
Thank you

I've used both. Both were 23mm knots, dense with soft tips and good flowthrough. The Shavemac had a bit more backbone, and I liked its 2-band bulb a bit better for face lathering. Good choice for a custom handle.

Thank you very much.
For face lathering, is it better to use bulb shape or fan shape?
I am thinking about 24mm knot with a 48mm loft

I love my Silvertip 2-band Shavemac. Has really soft hair, great backbone and flowthrough. I cannot compare the Shavemac to a Vielong as I do not own the latter.

25-50 Knot

I like a bulb for face lathering because it's precise in applying the lather, and I prefer its controlled bloom -- but either bulb or fan will do the job. Your 1:2 ratio is fine for the fan; I'd think about 50mm for the bulb. You could even go up to 52mm without losing much firmness. Chiefthunder's brush above is a beautiful example.

That's a beauty man! I dig the handle. 25/50 is perfect! I am thinking 24/48

Thanks a lot gentlemen, I was leaning more towards fan but I do own The Duke 3 which is fan, so I should probably try the bulb. Should be able to make a decision soon regarding the knot... I think I am liking the shavemac more!
Luckily a good friend is sending me a shavemac silvertip 2 band to try, should be getting it tomorrow. Should help me a lot making my mind.
Unfair to vielong but hey...

The Vie Long bulb shaped 2-bands and cut short lift 3-bands are very much overlooked.

I own 8 custom Shavemacs and 4 limited edition Vie Longs. I can't choose one over the other between all 12 to be honest.

All I know is that the Vie Long JL Petree in 3-band and 2-band bulb is among the best brushes ever made, no matter price range !

that's interesting because i don't think they get much attention at all!
how is the vielong 2 band compared to the vielong silver tip?
they also seem to be reasonably priced specifically when you compare them to simpsons or M&F for example

I can't comment on the Shavemac 2-bands but I have owned a Shavemac Silvertip and I currently own a VL silvertip (it's the short lofted one) and a Savile Row Silvertip which I believe is made by Shavemac.

I didn't like the Shavemac Silvertip, it was very soft but a tad too floppy for my liking. The VL is very (extremely!) dense and has just a little bit of scritch, I didn't like the scritch at first, but I don't notice it as much now. The Savile Row is the best of the three, it's super soft but has great backbone.

I hope that helps in some way.

Savile Rows are beautiful brushes unfortunately they don't sell konts separately but they are definitely on my list! Thanks for the feedback
