Hi guys,

I need some help with a recent acquisition. I recently bought a Rooney "Stubby 2" (at least that's what the gentleman who I got it from told me). It didn't really look like the "stubby 2" style I knew, so I asked a few questions. He couldn't help me much either since it was his only Rooney. This brush being my first Rooney, I don't know much about the brand or their styles of handles, shapes or numbers.

So I thought I would ask you guys. What do I have exactly ?

Here's the brush :

And when I google search Rooney Stubby 2, here's the kind if brush I see :

Any help is really appreciated !

Thanks !

You have a stubby, but seem like you may be disappointed. You should send it to me so I can dispose of it

Haha ! I'm not disappointed ! I just used it and I love it. Not as dense as some of my other brushes, but the feel on the face is quite nice. Nice medium-strong backbone with super soft tips. Flow through was exceptional as well !

I'm just curious to know the difference between the stubby that I have, and the stubby that is in the other picture. I don't know much about my new Rooney and I want to learn some more about it !

Stubby refers to the handle style and Rooney would change cetain things about it every year it seems. Evidently the three ring thing is a return of an older design

Also the two bands such as the one you have is a bit rarer as well as that handle style. They're quite desirable so they're hard to get.

You have a great brush! A few years ago Rooney changed the design from the single ring you have (the Stubby "XL" line had two) to the three rings in the photo you forwarded. I personally don't know why unless it was to differentiate the handles from Morris & Forndran designs (in case you didn't know M&F has a close relationship with Rooney). You can also see some minor changes as well, like how it is less "curvy" in the bottom part and with a less pronounced base.

My preference is for the brush you were lucky enough to obtain. Plus that's a gorgeous knot. Congratulations!

Looks like my CS2 (as Classic Shaving called it).  Chubby Stubby 2.

Mine is 3 band and the handle is 47.25mm with a single ring.

You've got a single ring Stubby 2 2-band. May be 'gel tipped', but others can describe how to figure that out better than myself.  Vintage blades used to sell them but they have been out of stock since 2013. They kept the listings up for these brushes until taking them down very recently. I think they may have given up on getting restocked.

The current Rooney Stubbies are the 3-ring versions with 3-band hair. Nice enough brushes, but I'd take yours over the current in a heartbeat.

I was very curious about the ring changes as well and asked Lee about it when I put in an M&F order a few months ago. He said there is no strategy behind the progression from 1 ring, 2-ring, to 3-ring designs other than providing an enhanced grip.

I like the single ring the best and really hope to have one one day  Blush

You have a regular Stubby 2. One ring around it. I have a 3, Stubby XLs have 2 rings around them and I forget what type of Stubby has 3 rings. The differences are in how densely packed the knots are and also size of the knot. Stubby XLs are wider and shorter than regular Stubbies.
