Hi Everyone,

I recently picked up a Hoffritz Futur and was wondering if anyone has any additional information on this razor. The sparse information that I have found about this razor has me thinking its somewhat rare to others actually believing that it’s a fake. I’ve seen a few pictures of other ones and even a few in their Hoffritz cases, so I’m pretty doubtful that someone would take the time to engrave the Hoffritz logo on a Merkur Futur…if they did, well kudos to them for duping me into paying $30 more than I should have for a used Futur.

I know it’s a relabeled Merkur and believe it was produced and sold around 1984-1986 somewhere in there. I’m speculating that it was at the tale end of the Hoffritz/Merkur relationship given the limited number of them out there. Under the cap it says W.Germany on one side and Solingen on the other.

I asked the person that I purchased it from where she got it and she stated it was her fathers, and speculated that he got it as a gift from a barbershop he used to spend a lot of time in.

I don’t see them as widely collectible or overly valuable given that the three or four that have been sold on e-bay and Etsy haven’t sold for anywhere near toggles, or even Hoffritz Slants for that matter. But either way it’s always cool to add something new and unique to the collection, and since I don’t have a Futur in my collection its win win in my book.

I get the impression that with the Futur that you either love it or hate it from a shave point of view. I’m excited to give it a try.

If anyone has any additional information to provide on this razor I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Greg

Look on the bottom plate as seen from under the top cap....has some markings along the edges....possibly Merkur made some special editions..once saw one with the Porsche Logo...at any rate looks like new..very clean...always adjust by placing head on towel and THEN turning handle as there is a lot of blade exposure on the ends and you can get a nasty cut if it slips.(learned my lesson a while ago)If you like to completely disassemble the razor remove top plate and blade....compress the bottom plate with your fingers or by pressing on a hard surface and unscrew....note placement of spring and bottom plate and reassemble  the same way. Most people shave on 2 or 2.5 but it adjusts from 1 to 6.....remember to adjust as I suggested before.

Same as Merkur....has brass for screw thread on handle and whatever Merkur uses in the other parts.....it is basically a MERKUR with the Hofritz name...just like the older ones from the 70 ,s.....besides which it is a razor not a hammer and it will outlast any of us with proper care.

I didn't even realize that Merkur made the Futur that long ago. I thought it was a recent introduction. Pretty fascinating thread.

Could be wrong on the date....I have a catalogue from 1984 and the Futur is listed...actually referring to the Hoffritz connection...not a big deal

I have yet to shave with it. Probably tomorrow morning actually. I've been on a bit of a buying binge lately and just added a Mergress and the new RazoRock razor that I had to try first. Talk about a difference there, wow.

I always try to give all my new equipment 5 or 6 tries before I really formulate a true opinion, but my initial thoughts are it seems to be a keeper. Heavy, well made razor that seems like it can be aggressive if you adjust it that way.

Too cool [now I have to get one - lol] - I think for $30 bucks it is worth it even if it was some type of fake - doubt that though - your razor looks very clean!

Hey Harvey, bumping an old thread as I just picked up a Hoffritz Futur. Any chance you could post a copy of the Futur listing in that catalog? Dovo-Merkur doesn't acknowledge existence of the Futur before 1985.

Just saw your post and the only catalogue I can find now says Design 84 Stuttgart...MERKUR/SOLINGEN and show the FUTUR on page 4 calling it the FUTUR WITH DUOCLIP and there is no mention of Hoffritz...but I know they were razors made for Hoffritz by Merkur way back...they had numbers in the catalogue 701 (Bright nickel)..702 ( GOLD) and 700 (satin silver)...at that time the razors were distributed by Consolidated Cutlery 696  NW  Sharpe St port St. Lucie Florida 33452 phone (305)878-6139...i,ll get back to you if I can find my other catalogue.....Harvey

Thanks much H. That catalog is interestng in and of itself as it runs contrary to information provided by Dovo.

Off topic perhaps - This thread makes me wonder about all the hate that zamak razors get in the wet shaving world. While razors in this thread look in pristine condition, maybe unused, but appears that zamak coated with chrome / nickel do last quite a while than is made out !

It really depends on the design and quality of the plating. The blade tray in the Futur is definitely the weak point if proper care isn't taken. Fortunately these can be swapped out easily, including the one from the $7 clone. FWIW the blade tray in my 1970s Progress shows no real sign of deterioration.

From my point of view the snap on design of the Futur is a good example of just because you can it doesn't mean you should. Among other issues the press in posts/holes can wear over time which with Zamak is asking for trouble. [Image: 4519c7b81efeab2d80b4c8005bd8e5bd.jpg]
