I'm a new 'ex-lurker', just signed up today. I posted in another section looking for a replacement after shaving balm for my beloved C.O. Bigelow Blue Elixir.

I am a long time 5+x blade shaver, but having grown tired of the cost of replacement blades, searched out and found you all, and learned a lot about safety and straight razors.

I ended up purchasing a Edwin Jaeger safety razor, which came with a few razors, as well as a sample razor box set.

After watching a few videos, reading a few articles, and some practice, I am absolutely in love with this razor.

Nothing shaves closer or smoother. I found I needed 3-4 passes w/ the 5+x mega razor, but need about 5-6 with the safety razor. However, there is no comparison to how nice a shave the safety razor is.

At first, it was very relaxing and 'zen-ish' to heat up some water, whip up some lather, and stand in front of the sink and shave - a long process, but totally worth it. The whole family (wife and two teen girls) would come watch me, all mesmerized. I told my youngest never to touch it, but you know kids - wicked cut on her finger. I don't think she'll ever touch it again.

When I have time, I love to shave at night before bed. But, in the mornings before work, a lot of time I'm rushed, so I don't have time for the whole process. So, I've figured out that (due to some reading) shaving in the shower using a mirror and hair conditioner makes for a nice, quick and dirty shave.

So glad I've figured out how to incorporate my lovely, shiny, new razor into both my slow and fast rituals. :-)

Thanks everyone for the advice and knowledge, hopefully I'll contribute to the discussion and learning someday.

Next step is to try my hand at a straight razor.

Old School is where it's at - from shifting cars, to shaving with single blade razors, to writing with fountain pens, to mowing with a manual reel mower... fits right in!
