Soap Commander Integrity is absolutely perfect. It is my "Go To" ASB. Unscented. Perfect menthol level. Seems to fix a bad shave.

In no particular order:

MdC huille végétale chamomile (basically coconut oil)
ABC Apricot Hull balm
Pré de Provence. Both the original and No. 63 are the same performance, but the No. 63 is a bit strongly scented for me.

Also good is Instutut Karité 25% ASB, but don't care for the scent that much.

Cheers, Steve

For me it’s L’Occitane Cade right at the top (wow this is good stuff), likely followed by Soap Commander (I have the Wisdom balm). I also like Proraso Blue balm, but I’m not sure its feel and performance are quite as good as the other two.

1. I Colonaili Mango Oil is my favorite, and nothing else seems to compare to the way it feels.
2. Any of the L'Occitane balms, or the Pré de Provence balms.
3. The Art of Shaving balms are also terrific.
4. Sapone Di Paolo is a terrific new balm (and soap) by a new artisan that is as good as any of my other products. He uses natural ingredients, such as apricot hull that is also used
in ABC balm, but at about 1/5 the cost of ABC.
5. ABC Apricot Hull balm is very nice, but also very expensive. I do love the gorgeous bottle and use it with ABC cream on special occasions.

I suppose name your top 3-5 commercial and 3-5 artisan balms, whatever number you choose!  Thanks.

If you're in a pinch Aveeno Men's Shave Lotion is pretty good. A little goes a long way.

Although it can feel a slightly greasy if you run your hand across your face even a few hours later.

In no particular order:
  • Esbjerg (milk, gel, balm - in that order) - will leave the skin well toned without being greasy (except for the milk which I only use in dry, cold weather)
  • Baume.be - incredibly rich, nice Fougère inspired scent that works well with the rest of the Baume.be line. Too rich for me in hot weather
  • Meißner Tremonia - the aftershave balms are soothing and leave your skin toned and refreshed, but the scents are not for the weak (give the black beer a wide berth)
As far as industrial products are concerned, I quite like Acca Kappa White Musk, Penhaligon's Bayolea, and Castle Forbes' Lime

Realistically, though, very few products actually disappoint. I have two aftershave balms from Croatia which cost less than €1 - and they work just as nicely as any €10 supermarket ASB.

My favorite overall balm is Pre de Provence's balm.  Its not too thick, not too tacky, and has that great PdP sage scent.  I also like Barrister & Mann's Kyovu non-alcohol "splash" and Lucky Tiger's After Shave and Face Tonic but mainly because its nicer during summer time.  Both the B&M and Lucky Tiger are splashes, but without alcohol.  Finally for a more traditional balm, the Kiehl's Post Shave Repair Gel is very nice.  Its not a "gel" like AoS's but a balm.  Its got a pepermint scent and a little bit of menthol but nothing too "face-freezing" and does a nice job, IMHO.

Josh, were you a fan of the now-discontinued Kiehl's balm? It was a thicker product than its replacement, and I personally thought it was better.
I used it this morning and still have a bit of the sample that I got.
I asked at my local branch if any bottles were left in the system. It would appear not.

Hi Rory - I don't think I've ever tried it.  I've "gotten into" Kiehl's only within the last 1 1/2 years and the first balm I know I've tried from them is that post-shave repair gel.  How was it better? FYI Nordstrom is "price matching" its Kiehl's line and many of their products are discounted.  I've become a big fan of their "Facial Fuel" line (I'm not a fan of their shave cream however).

Where does one purchase the I Coloniali Mango aftershave balm? How much menthol affect does it have?

Also what is the scent on the Crown Shaving Co. balm?
