Gents, I would like to keep this thread to posts from those who have tried BOTH the Thater (finest) silvertip and the Shavemac Silvertip (regular)…

please try to refrain from using comparisons with the DO1 or any 2-band…. there are plenty of threads with that mix, but I can't find any with a direct comparison between the two "normal" silvertips.
I am sure I am not the only person looking for this 1v1 specific comparison.  Thank you for your understanding.

That said, How do they compare (if same dimensions)?

FYI, I own a couple Thater (finest) silvertip brushes that I'm referring to, but have not used a regular silvertip Shavemac

I have both. Similar knot sizes, both bulb shaped. To me, the Thäter has slightly: Softer tips, more density, more backbone.

Hmmm... Not what I was expecting to be honest but I don't want to influence the polls too much so I'll leave it there.

You aren't thinking by any chance of the two bands are you? The OP was asking for a three band knot comparison to my knowledge...

I own 3 Thäter 3-band Silvertip and 4 Shavemac 3-band Silvertip

Fan shapes and bulb shapes

Thäter are slightly softer.
Shavemacs have slightly more backbone

Both are great brush brands and hair types.
Thaters have a more luxurious feel, Shavemacs are more efficient IMHO

Also look at their 2-band offerings.
Avoid D01 2-band if you prefer soft brushes.

PM me if you have further questions !

I think the critical deciding factor for me is that you can have the loft set at a specific height from Shavemac whereas you are stuck with the lofty Thater specifications.  I enjoy Thater brushes, but don't prefer them.

With mention of Thaters having quite a different feel based on the lofts, what is a popular knot middle size? 26mm? I was looking for a Thater website but wasn't sure if any other place to buy Thater beside SRD.

Your other best bet would be royalshave.com for Thater brushes.

24-26mm is a VERY popular middle knot size.

Thanks Attila. Actually, I do remember my buddy lending me his 3 band Thater and I will guess it was a 22mm or a 24mm. I could be wrong because I never heard from him what model # it was.

Thanks guys, looks like I don't need a 3-band silvertip Shavemac after all.
Instead, bought the "new" 2-band Shavemac in bulb at 23x50. Really looking forward to it.
Interested to see how the hairs compare to my 2-band Thäter.

Congrats!  Let us know how they compare for you, if possible.
