Quick question gents. Asked this question a little while back in an olive wood handle thread but no response. Probably a "duh" ? but I'm looking to get a handle but was wondering when you apply poly wipe do you also apply to the inside of the knot hole or does the adhesive seal it?

Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

Personally I would apply it in the hole as well, let it dry and then glue the knot in.

That's what I figured but wanted to be 100%. Thanks Mike!

Have you done it yet? We rationale is that the epoxy must reach the maximum places in the wood and the base of the knot.  By finishing it first, you loose some of those pores.  We use marine epoxy to do the slight gap filling.  By slight I mean if you dry fit or tried it out without the adhesive the fit should be quite snug.

When trying to reverse the set knot (trying to get out the knot that is dried/cured into the epoxy) we try the light steam method and then well let's keep it in the steam because nothing is happening.  Which progressed into the it been an hour let's look what happened.  So, on the up side - knot wasn't coming out.  Not even a little.  In fact the finish was ruined and the handle looked like it went through a war.  Knot firmly in place.

So, our experience would say epoxy it onto bare wood.  But it wouldn't hurt if the finish impedes the hold you can take it out and sand down the inside to bare wood again. YMMV.

No I have not done it yet.  Waiting on the handle to arrive. Thank you for the information on that. Will take that into consideration.

I am in the process of building a few brushes.  I plan to apply the finish to the handle, hole and all, and then carefully rough up the hole with some 80 grit sandpaper before setting the knot.  Please let us know how your finish/glue-up went (w/pics).

Good luck...

Will do.  Just trying to decide what knot I want to go with. Decisions decisions.
