I have been turning my blade over half way through the week, just to see. Sometimes no difference, sometimes yes. It's hard to quantify, being so subjective  as to whether there is a big difference or not. Just curious whether any one else has tried this. I think more times than not, flipping the blade gives a shave just as good as before. I'm sure science is some how involved. Wink

I don't notice a difference. This is with a single edge razor. I get 14 shaves out of one blade regardless if I "Mitt" it.

" Mitt"  Funny. I was turning my Gem PTFE and my Voskhod halfway through their serviceable life shave- wise just to see. I use my gem for a week  and then flop it. When I am traveling, I use my DE and and flip it after2-3 shaves. I was just curious if it made any difference and anybody else had tried this. With the price of blades vs shaves it probably doesn't amount to any substantial shavings. I just thought I'd try it.

I've wondered this myself. Most of the DE blades I've tried go south after four shaves. I'd love to push it to five so I only have to remember to change blades on Mondays (I skip weekends). I will give it a shot next week.

Brian, Not that it's scientific, but let me know. I'll do it another week.

I just remembered what does give a blade a little more life is if I transfer it to a different razor. When I find it struggling it in a mild razor (i.e. GEM Push Button) I find I can get a couple more shaves out of it an a different, more aggressive, razor ( i.e. ER 1924).

On my DE razors I flip the blade after every shave.  I usually get 7-8 shaves out of a blade.

After every shave with a DE razor, I disassemble the razor and wash and blot dry each of the four pieces separately; the blade then sits fully exposed to the air atop an inverted dose cup left over from a bottle of Vick’s Nyquil until I reassemble the pieces the next morning.  When I am using a St. Petersburg blade (GSB or Iridium Super), I can see the orientation easily (wax dots on one side, whch also has the numbers 1 and 2; no wax dots on the side that has the numbers 3 and 4); I always insert the blade into the razor with the wax dots showing on the inverted head (that is, toward the handle when shaving).  When I am using my preferred KAI blades, there are no wax dots and no printing at all on the blade, and so there is no way to tell whether I am putting the blade in the razor in the same orientation as I had done the day before or am flipping it from the previous shave.  While I have noticed a difference between the KAI and the St. Petersburg blades, I am pretty sure that the difference is not due to the fact that I never flip the orientation of the St. Petersburg blades (wax dots are always toward the handle), but presumably randomly flip the orientation of the KAI blades.

I believe this is all in your mind. It's still the same edge cutting.

Agreed,
Be they Feather, or Personna Lab Blues or Med Preps. I toss them after the 4th shave. I used to try and get a full week (7 shaves) out of a blade, but quit doing that. It's not worth the one bad shave  Firedevil

A Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol.  Sometimes nail polish remover when my wife does not hide it from me.

With my DE blades I use 1 side per week, flip and use up to 4 weeks.  I noticed on one brand of blade, Derby?, it is numbered 1-4 on the blade, so I flipped.

4 weeks?  Do you shave every day?

I'm sure the # of Shave out of each blade could also have a lot to do with how coarse your stubble is. The more work it has to do the less times you can use it. Common knowledge I know but could be why some get more blade use than others thinking flipping is the answer.

Gotta admit that I flip the blade between shaves. I don't do it because I believe it will materially effect my shave, I do it because I'm compulsive. I dis-assemble the razor and rinse under scalding water, then wipe and dry it -- the blade gets the rinse, followed by a careful blot with a towel. When all is clean and dry, I reassemble the razor for the next use.

I am currently using blades twice before discarding. Maybe I'm kidding myself, but I seem to detect a slight tugging sensation on the third shave. I can certainly squeeze more uses out of a blade, but a smooth, comfortable shave is my top priority, so two shaves and then; in the bin. (Often, the second shave is better than the first -- why? I've no idea)

I use a blade four times, two shaves per side, and then discard it.

This isn't exactly a scientific study, but I flipped my Gillette Super Platinum black today for shave #5 (I usually get 4 shaves out of one of these) to see how it would go.  It was pretty dull, but contrary to my expectations, it was not harsh.  The end result wasn't really a close shave, but it wasn't uncomfortable.
