Hi Guys,

I lathered a brush the other weekend and let it dry overnight. I overlooked the fact that the knot is very dense and it had some water left in the bottom. I then check it out last night and it had grown some green mold on a side of the by the handle on the hairs.

I lathered the brush and rinse it very good and then dried it on the towel the best I could. Some of the mold disappeared but was curious about what your guys thoughts are.

How bad is mold in a brush? What can I do to sanitize it? Should I take the brush to the shooting range?

Thanks for the help.

This happened to me with a Chubby 2 several years ago. I'm careful about trying to get a brush dry after its used but the Chubby developed a mold like you described and there was no help for it. The mold spread and it was done. I called the vendor, Lee at Lee's Safety Razors just to see what he thought might have happened and he promptly replaced the brush. I thought that was very generous. Lee said he had seen it before but its never happened with any other brush I owned nor until now have I heard of it happening to anyone else. I think once the mold starts there's no stopping it.

I am curious if a good washing in Dr. Bonner's soap, followed by a Vinegar (1:1 with water) soak might not take care of it? Worth a try IMO.

That's very unfortunate. If the solutions previously mentioned don't work, you can always look into a re-knot.
Good luck! I hope your able to save the brush.

Gave it 3 good washing of Almond Dr Bronners. Then did a 10min soak of half half water and white vinegar. A little bit less green is showing and so I let it sit in the sun. I will do the same tomorrow.

I may try and go get some borax as I was reading some old threads of B&B and many people recommended that.

Thanks guys and I will keep you updated.

Just curious.  Do you let your brushes dry hair up or hair down?

Usually I whip out as much water as possibly on my hand over the tub for 30 seconds, then hang them upside down in a stand. Then I take them out and finish the drying upright.

Was it an expensive brush? I'd be inclined to retire it...

It was $140. It was a VP Leonhardy 700740.

It was from a test lather so I didn't get to use it yet. Undecided

I would try contacting the vendor. If it was bad that fast then they may help you out.

It never hurts to ask.

Agreed, contact the vendor.

Unless that test lather was a long time ago and you stored the brush wet since...
