Are these vintage only?

Does anyone know how they differ from the Schick "Double Edge" blades you can still get on Amazon?

I got a PIF of a couple to try, and so far they've been pretty nice.

The ones out on the market at Amazon not as good as those that were made in the 1960s - early 1980s.

The current ones do not use as good of coating and are not honed and stropped as well as the vintage.

I have used both in good measure and have stashed the vintage ones away. 1960s Kronas and 1970s Platinums are really good blades.

The vintage Plus Platinums are definitely superior to the current Schick offerings. For me they are equivalent in quality to vintage Wilkinson Light Brigades.

One of my favorite blades. I wish I had more than 50 of them.
You can get them on ebay for a $1 each.

They do seem to last longer than most blades and $1.00 a blade is still much cheaper than carts. That said, I had a source for these @ $45.00 per 100.

The source dried up. An old independent drug store sold off their old stock. I should have bought more while I could.

I don't understand something. How do blades like these and others (Personna 74's) last so much longer? I'm up to shave #9 on this blade and it still feels like the first shave. It's lost no edge at all. I have never made it to shave 9 on a blade.

It's got to do with the quality of the steel, and how the edge is ground.

As well as the coating.

I still would really like to buy a 5 pack of Personna 74's. Is there any store or anyone who sells them?

You can find them on Ebay but would likely have to buy more than 5. No stores sell them as they were discontinued 30 years ago.

Hmm. If they last me twice as long as my current blades, they'd still be expensive, but a buck a blade is no longer in the realms of the insane.

Those perform similarly, then?

Not ask long lasting, but the Voskhods are 12 cents. I find them very sharp and smooth. YMMV.

Two weekends ago I stopped at a little small town Antique Store and was able to purchase a few packs of the blue label Schick Platinum Plus blades for $1.25 and they also had the Red label platinum plus blades but I just got the a few of the blues. Now I wish I would have bought all the other packages. I did also get one pack of the Personna 74 blades for the same price. It was the only one they had. Talked with the gentleman at the counter and he said he had a whole bunch of unused packages of DE blades back at his house. I told him to bring them up here and sell them. So, I hopefully will be going back in the next few weeks to see if he has any more.
