Bowls or scuttle. This seems to be a question that I have been pondering lately. As most of you know I am new to wet shaving. I originally purchased a vanderhagen set. Since then I have upgraded to a merker 34c several good soaps. Razorock xxx, dapper dragon blood orange, soap commander respect and art of shaving lavender. However the cup I have.is smooth and doesn't lather well. Partly because I am new to this method. So again I ponder scuttle ou bowl.

Both have their pros and cons, so it's not an easy question to answer.

To me the breakdown goes as follows:
  • My copper bowl I can hold in my hand, but my lather gets cold.
  • My ceramic scuttle keeps my lather warm, but it has to stay on the sink.
The 'correct' answer is to get one of each, and change between them as your mood dictates Tongue I find myself using my scuttle in the winter and my bowl in the summer.

The VDH apothecary mug is great to lather on soap. That said, you can't go wrong with a Georgetown Pottery scuttle or even better a Scwarzweisskeramik scuttle. Since I bought my SWK I have not used any other mug, bowl or scuttle.

I tried the scuttle but could never get the hang of it. It was a Georgetown G12 but for me the bowl seemed a little small so I switched back to a bowl.

I just got my bowl from a guy in GB .  Three week wait on delivery ( not the end of the world) . I Just posted a picture which will show the bowl's etching. If you live in a state that has a cold winter then I can see where a scuttle would offer you some warmth while you shave. And for sure warm lather is a nice touch to the shave. Good luck!

I use a scuttle (regular or brush) with each shave.  I prefer the warm lather.

I've always face or bowl lathered, but was given a Dirtybird XL scuttle for my birthday this past winter and love it. I'll probably go back either bowl or face lathering when it warms up a bit though.

I love my scuttles, but I don't seem to reach for them; I do however reach often for my Aesop SS BowlSisi

Agreed the Aesop bowl is awesome. I have a g20 and only used it once since I purchased the Aesop bowl.

Brush scuttle for me most of the time. It catches lather drippings when loading, keeps the brush hydrated between passes and can be used dry (not as a scuttle).

When I use a cream, same thing...scuttle (DB1.5).

If I bowl lather I reach for my IKEA stainless steel bowl. Fits great in the hand and comes at an awesome price.

I've never tried a scuttle, though hope to one day, but I love using a bowl. I am currently using this one.

I prefer a bowl as they are simple to use and the result is the same as a scuttle.
