I was intrigued by Mousers thread of Yardleys shaving soap so I went to Google to search it out, what I stumbled upon was quite interesting. It seems that there were shaving kits made for and marketed to "Ladies" of the evening. I really couldn't believe what I was seeing, I could imagine being in a shop and over hearing a woman make a request of the salesman for a Prostitutes shaving kit and all of the "Proper" ladies gasping. I found very little information on the web about these kits other than what was used in the description in the auction site. My interest in this is, who would pay $200 for one to use as a display?  Scared
BTW, I did find some vintage Yardley's soaps for sale  Wink

I think the seller added that to spark interest. One of my more interesting- and disgusting excavations was downtown L.A. We were under a freeway cloverleaf excavating a old street. It's first name was a very blunt racial slur for blacks followed by alley. That name has been expunged by almost all histories and replaced by a later name for one of our 'city fathers'- some Gringo who ripped off the Californios who founded Pueblo de los Angeles on top of a Tongva Village complex. Dig further down and you get Imperial Elephants. our freeways were deliberately routed to remove minority neighborhoods and 'social blights'.
So, we arrived every morning to remove the 'ahem' debri left by homeless people from our excavation units. We were on a row of prostitutes 'cribs' and excavated fine czech glass buttons, various apothecary bottles, one apache pocket revolver ( combination dagger-brass knuckles and 5MM pinfire ) and my great find- a brass bed headboard.  We pulled it up,heard a kaching and prized the cap off and recovered 17 silver dollars
These Ladies were AFFLUENT. Merchants wanted, and received some of their earnings. That's why 30% of the internet is porn and 70% shaving sites.
My mother supported us selling AVON in the late 60s. Her favourite call was a house in Simi Valley in what was then a 'better neighborhood.'
It was a discrete bordello and I had fun watching some of my teachers, the sherriff and a 2 city councilmen stop by. The ladies were a MAJOR economic force in then rural Simi.

When I read the thread name I had a feeling I knew exactly what it was. Seeing all the vintage shave equipment is pretty cool obviously depending on what it was. The weirder and rarer the better. Kind of like those vampire killing kits Smile
