Finally received my 55mm loft Epsilon 2-band.  I already have the 50mm 2-band with the garnet handle, this one is faux horn.

First impression is that the horn is quite beautiful and feels heftier in hand compared to the garnet.  According to my cheap-o calipers they are almost identical, within .5 mm or so. I think the difference has more to do with a subtle difference in the shape. The horn seems to have less taper.  Whatever it is I like the way it feels.

Fortunately the odd smell that Vie-Long's are known for is rather faint and should diminish quickly.

The extra 5mm in loft makes the knot feel a bit less dense... it certainly splays easier. The 50 mm is incredibly dense and requires a lot of work to load and lather.  I did not detect any scritch during a couple of palm lathers.

I'm looking forward to giving this new Epsilon a workout. The 55 mm is still damp in these photos.

FYI: 55mm=74 grams, 50 mm=67 grams.
I don't know what accounts for the difference- the knot or the handle stock.

I really love these Epsilon brushes. 2-band and 3-band "55"mm.

Gave the Epsilon a lather with some Tcheon Fung Sing Hercules soap. The lather was rich and creamy. The Epsilon had great flow through for such a dense brush. There was a bit more scrub, almost scritch, than I expected but it was in no way uncomfortable.

Perfect analysis, I love my original 2-band 55mm loft and it is unlike any other brush in my collection (past or present).  The hair is softer than other Vie-Long 2-bands and the knot is denser, making it very firm.  Somehow it still releases the lather well and thought there is a slight scritch, which I generally hate, I can't stop reaching for this brush.  I have a 55mm loft Silvertip on my wish list for the near future.

The knots on them have received many positive reviews, and they have excellent density, backbone and scrub.
