There seems to be something about empting compost bins that brings guests to the garden...
Last time it was a pair of doves, this time a lovely male Dendrocopos Major - better known as a great spotted woodpecker (or in Norwegian; flaggspett).

I absolutely love woodpeckers! The idiots! Nice pic!
We have 3 types. They all love to make their range known by tapping against things that resonate. A few weeks ago I had a pileated in the back 40 that wanted to make his presence known by doing exactly that. So I used my aluminum extension ladder to make him think he had competition. He'd tap out a message and I'd repeat it as best I could. I had him going for awhile and then another began to get involved from a different direction. They're too easy. We hear pileateds a lot but see them rarely.
In the link we most often hear the fast "wok" call.
