When I saw that Maggard Razors had added an Open Comb head to their line of razors, I immediately ordered one for my own Maggard MR1 handle. The top is Zinc Alloy and the Base is brass. The MR1 handle is Stainless Steel. I just had my second shave with it today. Brad Maggard rates it as mild to medium for aggression. I agree. I loaded a Gillette 7 O’Clock Blue Super Platinum in it. The blade alignment was spot on. It only took a few strokes to get the angle just right. It gave me  an easy, close, smooth shaves both days. This will be a great razor for folks wanting to try and Open Comb razor. It is fairly mild and very easy to use.

Nice review and beautiful pictures.  There seems to be more and more quality features about the Maggard razors. Brass base is nice.

Thanks for the great review Bob- I have been curious about Maggard razors but don't own any. Have also been curious about Ghost Town Barber. How do you like the soap/AS?

Thanks Bob- couldn't resist and just picked the Open Comb up myself. I had never used an OC prior to a Fatip I bought a while back and very much enjoy so look forward to giving this Maggard a run.

Many thanks again for the review!

I had my 3rd shave with it today. As I said, it is easy to adjust to and easy to use. I got three good, smooth, close shaves (not BBS close, but close). It does not shave as close as my NEW Short Comb or Red Tip Superspeed, but then I didn't expect it to.

I recently acquired a Maggard OC as a beater, something I can just use when traveling due to its low cost. Lo and behold, I had a surprisingly smooth and efficient shave. It 'feels' mild, but it does the job. Once you dial in the angle, it shaves very well. I've never gone by feeling of aggression in terms of how well a razor shaves. It's not a good way of determining the effectiveness of a razor. The smooth, carefree shave left quite an impression.

If you like mild razors, this is a great option. If aggressive razors are what you're into, you're probably better off looking for another razor. I really like mine and will be purchasing another one.

They should . . . I have a couple Maggard handles, and they fit on my iKon 102. I'd assume all the iKons have the same threading.

What about that Ghost Town Barber soap?  Ingredient list seemed OK with me.

I only paid $10 or so for the Maggard's OC head.

It's just okay. The head plate is thin, just like the tines. They feel sharp on the face.

The head piece and base plate are too light, making me add pressure which I don't like to do. The weight also throws the balance when combined with a handle of any substantial weight.

Of the 8 OC's that I have, I would rate the Maggard's near the bottom, like the Pearl.

If you're buying a OC head and handle, a better choice would be a Merkur 1904, for virtually the same price.

Completely different. The Maggard OC is exceptionally mild, like really very mild. The Ikon SC is on the aggressive end of the scale, though not as aggressive as its cousin the Ikon Tech.

That razor looks nice! Glad to hear it performs well too. I bought a Maggard MR8 a while back, primarily for the handle but since the head was only $4 more I bought it too. The handle is a pleasure to use, and at a weight of 150g there is no need to apply any pressure at all. Conversely, the head that I received has alignment issues. Easy enough to fix but I prefer to use my EJ and Muhle heads on the Maggard handle.

Great looking pictures. I'd imagine the Maggard OC to shave similar to a Merkur 41c/1904 OC just based off looks and description of being "mild".  I have a 41c as a travel/backup razor and it give very comfortable shaves.  Better to pair it with a sharper blade.

I have the Maggard MR7 handle with an open comb and really like it.  Quality is nice and does give a more aggressive shave compaired to other razors I have.  For the money you can't go wrong.

I have the Chiseled Face Orange Creamsicle aftershave and soap and really like them - have to try Ghost Town.

BTW - very nice photos.

Ghost Town is really very nice.  It's not what I think most would expect from a Barber Shop scent, but there is something very compelling about it.  The after shave is an exact match as well.

The Maggard heads for the price can't be beat.
